Richard Thomas Day of Manchester, the beloved husband of Jeanette D. Boudreau and the son of the late Joseph R. and Mary L. (Mannella) Day, died on Tuesday, July 22, 2014. He was born in Pittsburgh, PA on August 20, 1934. His family moved to Manchester when he was of school age. Richard graduated from Manchester High School in the class of 1952. He received his under-graduate degree from Boston College in 1956 (Psychology), his master's degree from Fordham University in 1958 (Psychometrics), and his Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut in 1971. Dr. Day was a licensed psychologist and a Professor of Psychology. While attending Boston College, Richard was a member of the United States Army Reserve Officer Training Corps. He received his basic training at Ft. Bragg, NC and, upon commissioning, was designated a Distinguished Military Graduate. Richard began his teaching career at Bennet Jr. High School in 1961 and, from 1961 to 1967, was the Director of Guidance at East Catholic High School. Dr. Day was a Professor of Psychology at Manchester Community College for 27 years, beginning in 1967, and served as its department chairman for twelve years. Prior to this full-time appointment, he taught the first psychology course at the college when it was offered in September of 1964. Additionally, he served as a consulting school psychologist for the Manchester Board of Education for over two decades. After his retirement, he took part in a research project sponsored by Yale University in which children with histories of epileptic seizures were given psychological evaluations at Yale New Haven Hospital and the Connecticut Children's Medical Center in Hartford. A communicant of St. James Church, Richard had been a lector and served terms as Chairman of the Parish Council and President of both the St. James School Board and the Home and School Association. Additionally, he served as an overnight volunteer at the Manchester Shelter. He was a member of the Hartford Archdiocesan School Board and served one term as its President. Dr. Day was also active as a Board Member of the St. James School Foundation. A dedicated sports fan, Richard especially enjoyed professional baseball and played this sport at Boston College. He was a former high school soccer referee and enjoyed his many years as a member of Tallwood Country Club. He also served as athletic director at Manchester's Camp Kennedy during its first three years of operation in the early 1960's. Richard valued traveling and especially his many trips across the United States, first as a child, next while serving in the military, and later with Jan and their children. During the spring of 2010, he and Jan once again motored over 8,000 miles from coast to coast, revisiting historical parts of U.S. Route 66 while renewing friendships and seeing family along the way. More recently, he and Jan visited his grandfather's birthplace in Cavriglia, Italy in celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary. Richard will be sadly missed by his wife and children: Thomas J. Day, his wife Julie, and their three children (Samantha, Joseph, and Erica) of Andover, David M. Day, his wife Audrey, and their four children (Emily, Jack, James, and Thomas) of Sherman, Catherine Williamson, her husband Daniel, and their two sons (Conor and Sean) of Manchester, and Edward R. Day, his wife Joan, and their daughter (Jessica) of Andover. In addition to his family he is survived by his sister, Lois Jean Dion-Roberts of Bloomfield and by several nieces, nephews, and godchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. James Church, 896 Main Street, Manchester at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 25, 2014. Funeral home attendance on Friday will be limited to immediate family. Attendees of the Mass are requested to meet at the church. Burial will follow at Hillstown Veteran's Cemetery, Manchester.
