Last fall my father had to be hospitalized with memory issues. Mr. Day would pick him and bring him to Shady Glenn to eat with his friends. That group of men mean so much to my father. From what my told me that is just the way Mr. Day was.

Dear Jan: On joining MCC in 1980 my first visit for our division's annual party was at your and Dick's wonderful home. That was the beginning of our long lasting friendship. Dick always had a big smile to greet you and make you feel as one of his close friends. I exchanged e-mails with Dick of and on after our retirement including his annual family update and picture. Being at the moment overseas visiting our extended faimily, I wish I could be with you to share your grief. Your eldest son, Tom, was my favorite student and still remember buying a rake from him while was working partime at Sears in his younger years. Dick's passing away came as quite a shock to me. He was four-years younger than me and looked much healthier than me. While my turn may not be too far away, I am always counting and remembering the colleagues who have since left me grieving for them. Dick was a gem. He was one of those who preferred to devote his entire life to teach and serve at a community college than at a university of his choice. He is one of those people whom I am sure to see in heaven if God would let me in too. Take care of yourself Jan. We, his former colleagues at MCC, will miss him. We all love you as much as we loved Dick. Mohammad From Fareham, England July 25, 2014

My deepest condolences to a great man, to whom I had the pleasure to know. Mr. Day's son Tom married my Aunt Julie when I was seven. They always welcomed me into their home and made me feel like one of the family. A time that really sticks out in my mind; was when my Aunt had premature labor with my cousin Samantha. I was taken to the Day's house in the middle of the night, as both Jan and Dick made sure I understood what was happening, gave me a snack and helped me adjust to being in a house I was not used to. The inner strength, poise and gentleness Dick possesed made him a man I looked up to. I have not seen him in many years, but the times spent with them, will stay with me forever.
All my love to the Day family,
Jennifer Matteson

I took my first college course in the summer of 1969 at the age of 36, nervous and uncertain about whether I could succeed in College. I was priviledged to start with a beginning class in Psychology taught by Dr. Day. He was such a wonderful teacher that I not only succeeded in that course but was encouraged to go on, finish with a degree at MCC and a bachelors degree at ECSU. I'm not sure all of that would have happened without having the advantage of Dr. Day's ability to make education enjoyable and attainable. It was over 40 years ago, but I still remember his teaching skills, engaging his students in his subject. May he rest in peace.

Dick was one of the key people who built Manchester Community College and made it what it is today. He was a caring teacher, and always put his students first. His family should be very proud of him. Dick always gave sound and sensible advice, and it was a privilege to know him. I will miss him.
