Obituary of Wynona Lopes

Wynona Alice Lopes, “Woody”, 93, beloved wife of the late William Lopes, passed away on Monday, December 13, 2021, at The Residence at South Windsor Farms. She was born in Machiasport, ME, on January 1, 1928, to Stephen and Carrie Wood. She graduated from New Hampshire State Hospital School of Nursing and was a Registered Nurse with Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and Hartford Hospital in Manchester. Woody married William Lopes in Machiasport, ME and eventually they found their forever home on Lake Street in Manchester, CT where they raised their two children William Jr and Debra. Woody and William enjoyed traveling the world together in their retirement years and were blessed with two grandchildren. Throughout Woody’s life she made it her mission to be of service to others. She was an active member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church and the Hartford County 4H Club and volunteered for the Hockanum Valley Friendly Visitors program, the food pantry, and the Samaritan Homeless Shelter. In 1996, she was awarded outstanding volunteer by the Manchester Community Services Council. Woody spent time doing what she would call, “the little things” for others; making hundreds of care packages for friends and family, spending timeless hours making soups and baked goods for the church fairs and knitting hundreds of garments for local organizations within the community and beyond. As Woody would say, “God gives back what you give.”

She is survived by her brother John Wood and his wife Carolyn, two sisters; Lois Wasson and Nellie Gatcomb, her son William Lopes, Jr., her daughter Debra King and her partner Lyle Smith, her grandchildren Leah Lopes and Todd Dzen and his wife Melissa, and her great-granddaughter Avery Dzen, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 27th, 2021, at 11:00 am at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 41 Park Street, Manchester, with visitation at the church prior from 10-11 am. The family asks that you join them to celebrate Woody’s life with many pictures and wonderful stories during the visitation hours. Burial will follow the services at East Cemetery, 220 East Center Street, Manchester. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Vitas Hospice Healthcare at 199 Park Rd Ext Ste 102, Middlebury, CT 06762.
