Obituary of William M. Lopes
William M. Lopes, 91, of Manchester passed away at home on Saturday October 13, 2018. Born 5/27/1927 in Falmouth, MA, he enlisted into the Navy and served during World War II on a Destroyer Escort, D.E. 358, USS Mack in the Asiatic Pacific area and China. After his discharge, he went back to Lawrence High School in 1947 and graduated from Industrial Tech, Boston in 1949.
William served in Sea Scouts and State Guard, also worked for Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution on a Research ship and was a mentor on an oil project off Port Arthur, Texas and the Louisiana Coast. He served as a 4-H leader and on the Advisory Committee of Hartford County. William worked at Pratt & Whitney in Plant Engineering for 35 years. He enjoyed playing golf, skiing, swimming, and hockey. He played high school sports and semi-professional football.
He is survived by his loving wife Wynona (Wood) “Woody” Lopes, his son William M. Lopes II and his partner Staci Van Solkema, his daughter Debra King and her partner Lyle Smith, his grandchildren Leah Lopes and Todd Dzen and his wife Melissa, his great grandchild Avery Dzen, his sister Eleanor Slosek, his brother Richard Lopes and his wife Madeline and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday October 19th at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church 41 Park St. Manchester, CT followed by burial at East Cemetery 220 East Center St. Manchester, CT. The John F. Tierney Funeral Home has care of the arrangements.
