Obituary of Kevin J. Shea

Kevin J. Shea, 53, of Manchester passed away on Monday (November 12, 2012) at his home, surrounded by his family. Born in Manchester on February 25, 1959, he attended local schools and graduated from the University of Hartford with both a Bachelors and Masters degrees in education. For many years he taught both Special Education and Science at Stafford High School. His contact with students went beyond the usual school day. He organized many projects including one that won first prize in a competitive regional science fair that resulted in an award to his school. He believed in hands on learning, using visual, auditory, analytical, and whatever learning style a student had. His love for flying led him to join the Civil Air Patrol and he quickly rose to the rank of Captain, as his flying ability was recognized. His love for teaching followed him to the Civil Air Patrol and he became a principal teacher to the young cadets not only teaching the art and science of flying but all aspects of the air patrol. He loved the outdoor life and acquired expertise in skiing, scuba diving, and jet skiing, especially enjoying the latter with his brother Dan on the Connecticut River. Kevin was known as Mr. Fix It. He had a natural ability in all forms of construction and repair. A familiar cry of "Where is Kevin?" was common within the family when he was needed and he always responded with the right answer. Kevin was predeceased but his mother Grayce K. Shea. He is survived by his father John F. Shea, his step-mother Polly Shea, his brothers Martin Shea and his wife Lynn, Daniel Shea and Doris, his sister Christine S. Riordan, nephews Matthew and Colin Shea and nieces Isabella Shea and Michelle Gaffney. The family gives special thanks to Elaine Warner for the tender and loving care she gave in Kevin's final days. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:00 at St. James Church 896 Main Street Manchester on Friday the sixteenth followed by burial in St. Bridget Cemetery Manchester.
