Obituary of John Thompson

John W. "Jack" Thompson, 84, of Manchester, the husband of the late Elizabeth (Collins) Thompson and Carol Shanley died Wednesday, October 26, 2016 at The Village at Buckland Court, South Windsor. Born in Staten Island, NY he was the son of the late John Walter Thompson and the late Lillian Haggerty Thompson. Jack was a graduate of St. Peter's High School, Staten Island, NY, received his Bachelor of Arts from St. Michael's College in Winooski, VT and his Master's Degree in Political Science from the University of Connecticut. He was a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps serving during the Korean War. In addition to his wife, Carol, he is survived by his 5 children Sean Thompson and his wife Shannon of Southington, Peter Thompson and his wife Kristen of Somers, Michael Thompson of Windsor Locks, Kevin Thompson of Bolton and Susan Gordon and her husband Andrew of Bolton; and his grandchildren Melissa and David Thompson, Benjamin Thompson, Daniel, Kevin, and Casey Gordon, and Michael and Alex Paquette. He is also survived by his sisters Sally Ann Paul and her husband William of New Jersey, and Margaret Brennan and her husband George of New Jersey; his sister-in-law Nancy Collins of New York; and numerous nieces and nephews. Jack served 3 terms on the Manchester Board of Directors from 1971-1977, serving as Mayor from 1971-1975 and Deputy Mayor from 1976-1977. Jack also served in the State Legislature as the Representative of the 13th Assembly District. He served thirteen consecutive terms beginning in 1986 through 2012. During his time in the legislature he championed many causes relating to children's issues and mental health issues which garnered numerous awards and recognition. Jack was very proud of the community of Manchester and his service to the town and it's citizens. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, October 31st at 10:00 a.m. at St. James Church 896 Main St. Manchester followed by burial with military honors in East Cemetery, Manchester.
