Obituary of Thomas N. Rufini

It is with great sorrow that we inform you of the passing of our beloved father, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend. Thomas N. Rufini, 69, of Manchester, died Tuesday July, 5, 2016 at St. Francis Hospital. Born in Hartford, he was the son of the late Enrico T. and Ethel S. Rufini. Tom served in the US Army National Guard, and was an active member of I.A.FF Local 1579 Professional Firefighters of Manchester for 25 years, serving on the executive board as Vice President from 1984-1988. He also was an active member of the Manchester Fire Fighters Junior Athletic Association. He was a member of Manchester Lodge #1893 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, and had been honored as Elk of the Year. He was a member of the Washington Social Club; Manchester Sportsmen's Association and was very active with the MDA. In 2015 Tom was presented the President's Lifetime Achievement Award for his lifelong commitment to building a stronger nation through volunteer service. Tom founded an annual Golf Tournament to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association that began in 1984. As of 2014 the tournament was recognized by the MDA as the longest running tournament benefiting Muscular Dystrophy. Tom loved helping people and would readily volunteer for most any cause, especially those which benefitted children. Over the years Tom was involved with Toys for Tots, Make a Wish, the Manchester Road Race, the Silkworms, midget football and the Travelers Championship, to name a few. He also loved rooting for his beloved Giants and UCONN Huskies. Whether it was running an annual Super bowl or NCAA basketball tournament pool, visiting the Children's Hospital, or helping to make sure that needy children had a present to open at Christmas time, Tom loved to serve. He truly believed it was better to give than to receive.
