Obituary of Phyllis Zatkowski

Phyllis A. Zatkowski, 96, passed from this life on March 6, 2016, to join her late husband of 64 years, Stanley Zatkowski Sr. The daughter of the late Anna (Gworek) and Joseph Orlowski, she grew up in Rockville and settled in Manchester where she guided and watched generations learn, progress and laugh. During her children's youth, she was supportive in their chosen paths and active in many school functions and scouting endeavors. After earning her R.N. from Hartford Hospital School of Nursing in 1941, she accepted a position there, becoming an assistant head nurse. During this time she contracted tuberculosis from a patient, requiring 16 months of inpatient treatment in a sanitorium in Connecticut. Upon her recovery, she taught nursing aide courses for the American Red Cross during and after World War II, and then worked in the office of Dr. Robert K. Butterfield for several years. In the early years of Assumption Parish she taught religious education and was an active member in the many events and activities of its Ladies Guild, serving over 15 years on the flower committee. As a faithful participant in the Women's Retreat League and her Prayer Circle, she made many friends who kept in contact for the years to come. Above all, she enjoyed time spent with her family throughout the years and generations, both at home and in numerous special places creating treasured memories. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Ann and Gary Matre of Mancheter, Drs. Mary and Kent Johnson of Michigan, and Stanley and Deborah Zatkowski Jr. of Massachusetts. She will especially be remembered by her grandchildren Katie and husband John Dowd, Mary and husband Sean Powers, Daniel Johnson, Ph. D., Ellen Zatkowski, and Samuel Zatkowski, and great grandchildren, Sean Jr., and Natalie Powers, and John Jr., and Samantha Dowd; several cousins, niece and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her sister, Elizabeth Fiedorczyk. The family expresses their sincere appreciation to Manchester Manor for their care and support during this last chapter of our mother's journey with us.
