Obituary of Robert R. Tucker

Robert "Bob" Tucker, 89, departed this earth on November 1, 2015 surrounded by his family. He leaves behind his wife Naomi, son Robert, granddaughter Jessica and her husband Ben, grandson Rhet, son Terence, daughter Donna Stephens. He also leaves behind many devoted family and friends. Robert was born the son of the late Dora and Joseph Tucker on January 22, 1926 in Rockville, CT. He was predeceased by his brothers David, Hyman, and Israel, sister Ida, and beloved daughter in law Bette Tucker. He attended local schools in Rockville. He was drafted for military service in March of 1944. Upon completion of basic training he was sent directly to Europe and into the Battle of the Bulge. A few months later he was wounded by artillery shrapnel and after six months of recuperation was medically discharged. He earned numerous awards in the military including the S.S. Rifle award, Artillery Gunner award, and three service stars. He also received two special honors, the Bronze Star of Valor and the Purple Heart. Upon return to CT, he completed a business certificate program which qualified him for a job with the Auto Club of Hartford selling AAA memberships. He also worked for the New York Life Insurance Company and the Minnesota Life Insurance Company. He led both companies in sales and received many awards. After several more years of success in the business, Bob decided to start his own agency in a building he built in Talcottville. In total he spent 45 years in the business. Bob was very active in town recreation and his passion for it prompted him to found the Vernon Community Basketball Program where he was director for 24 years. The program was fully supported by donations and volunteers. He also sponsored many teams. In his later years he got serious about golf and proceeded to win the Championship of the Army and Navy Golf League. Bob was a life member of the Manchester Elks, Purple Heart, D.A.V., V.F.W., and Army and Navy Club. He loved spending time with his family and friends, house projects and tinkering, being outdoors, golfing, and traveling. More than anything he loved spending time with his grandkids; taking them on trips, watching their sporting events and concerts, and just spending time with family. Calling hours will be from 4-7pm at John F. Tierney Funeral Home, 219 West Center St., Manchester on Wed 11/4. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations to be made to the Military Order of the Purple Heart - Attn: Burke Ross, Adjutant 47 Christine Dr. Huntington, CT 06484.
