Obituary of Genevie K. Shanahan

Genevie (Dalenta) Shanahan, 91, of Yarmouth Port, Mass., previously of Coventry and Manchester Conn., passed away Sept. 2, 2015. Born in Wethersfield, Conn., she was the daughter of the late Peter Dalenta and Francis Bochenek. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph L. Shanahan Jr., and by her siblings: John Dalenta, Emilia Dalenta Bednarz, Anna Dalenta Moskel, and Edward Dalenta. She was a graduate of Catholic University in Washington, D.C., and St. Francis Nursing School in Hartford, Conn. She taught at Buckley School in Manchester, Conn., and worked as a nurse in Meriden, Conn. She was a member of the Lady Slippers, the Red Hatters Club and the Gravity Girls. She volunteered for the VNA of Cape Cod and knitted hats and scarves for the Seamen's Church Institute Christmas at Sea program. She was a devout Catholic and attended Mass daily until her health prevented her from doing so. She enjoyed traveling, swimming, knitting and crossword puzzles. She was an avid New England Patriots fan and never missed a game. She leaves her two children: Margaret Shanahan of Yarmouth Port, Mass., and Joseph L. Shanahan III and his wife, Nancy, of Wakefield, R.I. She also leaves her three cherished granddaughters: Mara Stangl, Maria Shanahan and Alexa Shanahan. Additionally, she is survived by her sister-in-law Alberta Dalenta, many nieces and nephews, and countless friends. A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, Oct. 3 at 10 a.m. at St Maurice Church in Bolton, Conn. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Genevie's memory to Katelynn's Closet, 33 North Main St., South Yarmouth, MA 02664. Katelynn's Closet is a non-profit organization that provides needy children on Cape Cod and the Islands, ages 4-18, with clothing, footwear, and basics in order to help them maintain their dignity and foster self0esteem.
