Obituary of Francis Long

Beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, Francis Michael ("Doc") Long, 86, of Manchester, CT passed away on March 30, 2012. Doc was born in Hartford, CT, on January 19, 1926, son of Michael Francis Long and Katherine (Fitzgerald) Long. He attended St. Augustine's School and Buckley High School in Hartford, CT. Doc served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the U.S.S. Wasp. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 years, Kathleen ("Kay") Albrecht Long, his brother John Long and his sister Eileen Long Curtin. He is survived and will be greatly missed by his four children Kathleen Devin and her husband Peter of Southington; Michael Long and his wife Barbara of Wethersfield; Bitzy Wilson and family of Acton, MA; and Kellie Quinn and her family of Jefferson City, MO. Doc was an active and loving grandfather to Michael and Alyssa Devin, Michael Long, Kaitlin Long Vallera and her husband Dan, Melanie Wilson Cipar and her husband Jim, Bryan and Kaila Wilson, Haley and Robby Quinn; and great grandchildren Antonio and Christopher Vallera and baby Cipar. Doc will also be missed by his beloved sister Margaret Daly and his many nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors. Doc spent his entire career with Northeast Utilities. He was a faithful communicant at Assumption Parish for over 50 years. He was a lifelong avid golfer and enjoyed playing in the HELCO men's league as well as playing with Kay and friends. He also loved a good game of cards with friends or grandchildren. Doc had a wonderful sense of humor. He made life more enjoyable for all those around him through his positive outlook and good nature. There will be a mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, April 2nd at Church of the Assumption, 29 S. Adams St., Manchester, CT followed by burial at Mt. St. Benedict in Bloomfield, CT. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Church of the Assumption. The John F. Tierney Funeral Home, Manchester has care of arrangements.
