Obituary of Charles N. Stetson

Charles N. Stetson, 83, of Manchester, died Tuesday, July 21, 2015 at Manchester Memorial Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Born in Hartford, October 5, 1931, he was the son of the late Douglas and Barbara (Newell) Stetson. Charles graduated from East Hartford High School in 1950, leading the Hornets to the State and New England Championships his Junior and Senior years. After high school, he played basketball for and graduated from Hillyer College. Charles then served as M.P. in the Army during the Korean War. He played semi-pro basketball with the East Hartford Explorers and Marco Polo Basketball Teams. He was a partner of the former BMY Construction Company and during his so-called retirement years, he helped his two sons build their construction companies. Charles' passion was golf. He was a past member at the Wethersfield Country Club and Manchester Country Club. Besides his very respectful handicap, and four holes-in-one, his most memorable golf experience was playing two rounds at St. Andrews in Scotland. Charles was a good man, father and friend and will be missed. He leaves behind his wonderful companion and friend Norma of Manchester; his children William J. Stetson of Cromwell, Daniel P. Stetson and his wife Nancy of Glastonbury, MaryBeth Welch and her husband Lee of Windsor, Meg DeLeo of Hebron and Cathy DeRienzo and her husband Jamie of Hebron; his grandchildren Dylan, Hannah, Lauren, Charles, Samuel, Jaila and Anthony; and Norma's children Albert Martin and his wife Colleen, Vicki McSweeney and her husband Kelly and Doug Martin. He is also survived by his former wife Dorothy Campanelli of Wethersfield; his sister Joan Paternastro and her husband Richard of Manchester; his sister-in-law Dorothy Stetson of South Windsor; numerous nieces and nephews; Norma's extended family and his four-legged buddies Harry and Sally. He was predeceased by his brother Donald Stetson and his sister Phyllis Botka. The family would like to thank the staff at Manchester Memorial Hospital, especially Dawn, who comforted Charles and his family. Family and friends may call at the John F. Tierney Funeral Home 219 West Center St. Manchester on Sunday, July 26th, from 3-6 p.m. Burial at a later date will be private and at the convenience of the family.
