Obituary of Michael J. Hull
Michael (Mike) J. Hull, 57, passed away suddenly on July 10th. Mike loved life and lived it fully and passionately. He had a wide-ranging, keen intellect and was always quick with a grin; sometimes mischievous, always genuine; Mike always had others sharing the laugh.
He was a man of many interests all of which he indulged passionately: on any given day he could be cooking 5 dishes for a group of friends coming for dinner; pointing out an upcoming passage from the music he was forever listening to; throwing the ball for his beloved retriever to chase, regaling the listener with some outrageous story of doings in a Yorkshire pub, stories of their best mates in Australia & their two daughters, and holding forth on the latest book he was reading for his book group or on politics of the country. And then his wife Pam, the love of his life for the last 39 years, would appear and, onto the fire they built and tended together starting at the high school prom, he would unfailingly add another branch --- a kiss or a hug, a small, heartfelt gesture to keep their flame bright.
All who knew him knew a caring and compassionate man, a man with a deep love for his family and friends, a man deeply enamored with the natural world and a man dedicated to the important scientific work he did at Yale University. He worked at Yale for 33 years and he reveled in his career. His colleagues and friends held him in the highest possible regard both for his technical prowess in successfully carrying off incredibly demanding experiments and, importantly, for his presence----he was greatly admired for his generosity as a teacher, a mentor and collaborator. Despite his professional accomplishments, Mike was a man of humility--- not many knew that he had published dozens of articles in leading scientific journals. It says something meaningful indeed when, working at such a prestigious university, Mike was known as "The Incredible Hull".
Mike leaves his wife Pam, his brother Jack Hull and wife Wendy Falck, his sister Nancy and husband Dick Guy, his father Russ and Pam's extended family -Pam's two sisters, and brother and their spouses, and many special nieces and nephews and friends. He is pre-deceased by his mother Shirley.
