Obituary of Mildred Whalen

Mildred E. (Funk) Whalen, widow of Richard J. Whalen and longtime resident of East Hartford, died Saturday (May 2, 2015) at St. Francis Hospital. She was 93. Millie was born on March 16, 1922, the daughter of Herbert and Ethel Funk of East Hartford. She was a graduate of East Hartford High School, where she fell in love with her soul-mate, Dick Whalen. Mille and Dick raised their family on Oak St. in East Hartford and were married for sixty-one years before Dick's passing in 2008. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Richard Dyer of Manchester; her son and daughter-in-law Thomas and Sheila Whalen of Manchester; and her son and daughter-in-law Richard and Lillian Whalen of Rocky Hill. Millie was a kind and caring grandmother to eight grandchildren and their partners; Meghan Korn and her husband Karl; Brian Dyer and his wife Kaleen; Michael Dyer and his fiancée 'Cathleen Devanney; Scott Whalen; Julie Kozlowski and her husband Steven; Matthew Whalen; Allison Frailey and her husband Jackman and Daniel Whalen. She is also survived by her great grandson, Aiden Korn and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Millie was predeceased by her beloved brother, Norman Funk of East Hartford and his wife Ida (Babe) Funk and her special friends, Joe and Lucy Pandolfe of Wethersfield. Mille was employed prior to her marriage as a telephone operator with Southern New England Telephone. She found true joy in helping others, celebrating special events with friends and family and making a wonderful home for her husband and children. Millie was a terrific baker, bowler, knitter and flower arranger. She was also an inveterate bingo player and Red Sox fan. In recent years, Millie resided at Brookdale Place in West Hartford where she received wonderful assistance from the staff. The family also wishes to express its appreciation to the physicians, nurses and staff at St. Francis Hospital for their compassionate care. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday (5/6) at 9:15 from the John F. Tierney Funeral Home 219 West Center St. Manchester followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating Millie's life, at 10:00 at St. Christopher Church 538 Brewer St. East Hartford with burial in St. Mary Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00.
