Obituary of Charles A. Campbell

The family of Charles A. Campbell announces his death at home in Manchester on April 23, 2015. Charlie was the loving and devoted husband of the late Anne M. Campbell. Born on November 12, 1919 to William B. and Sarah (Boyle) Campbell, Charlie was raised in Pittsburgh, PA, residing there until his induction into the U. S. Army in October 1941. Charlie was a proud veteran of World War II, serving posts in Iceland and Europe until his discharge from active duty in December 1945. Following his active duty service, Charlie entered the United States Army Reserves where he served another twenty years until his retirement in 1965 at the rank of Captain. Charlie met Anne just months before being drafted and corresponded with her during the four years he was in the Army. While still on terminal leave, he returned to Connecticut and married her during a blizzard on December 1, 1945. They settled in Manchester in 1954 and moved to Vernon in 1978. Charlie worked for the State of Connecticut from January 1946 until his retirement in May 1981. He began his career with State Highway Department and held positions in the Department of Parks and Forests and the Connecticut Valley Hospital before becoming the first Business Manager for the Office of the Attorney General, a post held for the last 14 years of his career. An avid card player, he was an active member of the Vernon Senior Center for many years. He was also an active member of Saint Bernard's Parish, Rockville for the past 37 years. Charlie was a founding member of Little Miss Softball of Manchester and was their guiding force as an officer and coach for more than 35 years. He was inducted into the Manchester Sports Hall of Fame in November 2012 in recognition of his dedication and commitment to the program. He was also an active supporter of Boy Scout Troop 120 for many years, receiving the Bronze Pelican award from the Hartford Archdiocese for his support of catholic scouting. Charlie is survived by his children, Anne Campbell-Maxwell of Fishkill, NY, Claire Campbell of Manchester with whom he lived for the past four years, and Claire's partner, Gary Pike, Richard and Diane Campbell of Manchester and MaryBeth and Dail Heath of Virginia Beach, VA. A source of joy and pride to him, he is also survived by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Danielle (Abran) Bloom, her husband, Matthew, and their children, E.J. Wilson and Sydney Bloom of East Granby, Conor Campbell of Manchester, Stephen and Dale Maxwell and their children Sam, Benjamin, and Joseph of Amston, Richard Maxwell and his wife, Christina of Glastonbury, Stacie Campbell of Bristol, and Christy (Reinholdt) Sughrue and her husband, Matt, of Virginia Beach, VA. He is also survived by five nieces and a nephew. In addition to his beloved wife Anne, he was predeceased by his parents, siblings Helen, William, Virginia, Joseph, Edward (Frannie) and Stephen; his son-in-law, Wilfred Maxwell; and his grandson, Mark Campbell. Calling hours will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Sunday, April 26 at the John F. Tierney Funeral Home, 219 West Center Street, Manchester, CT. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 11 a.m. at St. Bernard's Church, 25 St. Bernard Terrace, Vernon, CT.
