Obituary of Lucille M. Mahoney

Lucille (Murphey) Mahoney, 102, wife of the late and former Mayor of Manchester Francis J. Mahoney, died on Easter Sunday, April 5, 2015, at Woodlake at Tolland surrounded by her family. Born in Manchester on Jan. 12, 1913, she was the daughter of Charles and Margaret (Johnston) Murphey. Lucille was employed throughout her life at many places: Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Co., Veeder Root, Norton Electric, Burton's, and Pratt & Whitney. After retiring, Lucille and Francis spent winters in Sarasota, Florida, and summers in Misquamicut, Rhode Island. Years later she resided at Academy Point in Mystic, Herbert J. Clark House in Glastonbury, and then Woodlake at Tolland. Lucille was very interested in politics and supported her husband, Francis, during his successful campaign for mayor and legislative representative from Manchester. She was active in civic affairs as one of the early founders of Camp Kennedy and took great pride in meeting Rose Kennedy at the dedication of the camp. Having a rich and active life, Lucille especially enjoyed family gatherings and holidays with her family, planning trips for the AARP, playing bridge and Scrabble, cooking and baking for her family, and collecting antiques to furnish the Keeney Street schoolhouse. She is survived by her daughters, Susan Broneill and her husband, Robert, of Tolland and Nancy Mooney and her husband, Mark, of Middlebury, Vermont; her grandchildren and their spouses Deborah Williams, Mark Mooney Jr., Jennifer and Michael Kane, Michael and Signe Mooney, Kristopher Broneill and Lisa Blake, Matt Broneill, and Megan Boord; her great-grandchildren, Daniel Williams, Keeley and Althea Kane, Alex Blake, Noah and Locklyn Broneill, Naomi Boord, and Finnley and Harper Broneill; and several nieces and nephews. Lucille was also predeceased by her brothers, Horace and Lincoln. Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 13, at 10 a.m. at St. Matthew Church in Tolland. Burial will follow in East Cemetery, Manchester. Family and friends may call at the John F. Tierney Funeral Home, 219 W. Center St., Manchester, on Sunday, April 12, from 4 to 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Matthew Church, Tolland.
