Richard Marzialo

Obituary of Richard Marzialo

Richard was a Bluesman. Not the old stereotype, but a true Bluesman, nonetheless. Music was everything and mattered more to him than anything else except, maybe family. For us, he made music part of our family and, unlike many of the old Bluesmen, his family always welcomed him. He was born on September 27, 1951, the second child of Dr. Nicholas A. and Mary H. Marzialo in Manchester Connecticut, where he grew up. Music defined him early. Our father provided him with professional lessons while he was in grade school, and we remember the sound of his practice filling our house for hours at a time. By the time he was a teenager he was a committed musician, and by his early 20s, he was performing in small clubs and bars in the northeast, sometimes under pseudonyms, such as "Red Marz" or "Memphis Slim." Richard attended the University of New Hampshire, and The School of Contemporary Music in Boston, where he met people who became lifelong influences and friends. The first band that he toured with was "Coco and the Lonesome Road Band." Richard was married in 1979 at La Cava in Nogales, Mexico while living in Phoenix, Arizona. He left for Nashville Tennessee later that year. He had first visited Nashville with the band "Cabin Fever" in 1975 to record an album, and decided then that he would live there some day. He played in local clubs and bars, such as the venerable Springwater, and did studio work for a variety of bands. If you saw Steve Earle or Steve Warner in their early years, there is a good chance that you saw Richard behind them. He played in venues from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to Carnegie Hall in New York. For years, while in Nashville, he toured and played at the Grand Ole Opry with such well-known members as Jimmy Dickens, Jeanne Pruett, Johnny Paycheck, Stonewall Jackson, and Ray Price. After a couple years touring with Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, Richard left the band and moved back to the northeast, where he performed locally and around Boston. He was proficient with drums, in most stringed instruments, and keyboard. He also began teaching, which he did the rest of his life. Richard died of natural causes at his home in Portsmouth, Rhode Island on Saturday, November 15, 2014. He is greatly loved and will be missed by all who knew him. Richard is predeceased by his parents, Nicholas and Mary Marzialo, his sister, Susan Marzialo, and his daughter, Bridie Day. He is survived by his daughter, Angela Ariel, her husband, Yaron, and his grandchildren, Yael, Nir, Ozz, and Sagi Ariel; his brothers, David Marzialo (Pam, deceased); Michael Marzialo, his wife, Linda, and their children, Nicholas and Lin; Peter Marzialo and his wife, Brenda Cooke; Marc Marzialo, his wife, Jodie, and their children, Sophia and Dalila; his sisters, Nikki Marzialo-Uppling, her husband, Ken, and their children, Zachary and Susan; Mary Marzialo, her husband, Michael Fowler, and their children, Michaela and Sam; and Adeline Marzialo, her husband, Kurt Sampara, and their children, Mary and Marc.
