Helen and Family, We are so sorry for your loss. Gene was a great coach and friend. We are grateful for the support Gene and the Newman/Foss team gave us in our darkest days with the passing of our son Kyle who played for Gene. We will remember the last game we went to see this summer...when we got there Gene was playing right field because not enough players had shown...a great coach, a great teammate, a great man.

To Helen and family:
It's not likely that you would remember me. I played with the Eau Claire Braves in 1959. Gene was one of 4 Connecticut teammates including Wayne Wilson, Jim Davins and myself. I remember that you and Gene attended my wedding in Bridgeport, CT on December 26, 1959.
Over the years since then I saw many articles about Gene but missed the opportunities to contact him. I now regret this!
I have a photo of Gene taken at Carson Park during a team practice and a team photo including our "skipper", Travis Jackson, who is now in the Hall of Fame. (If you don't have them let me know. My e-mail address is included with this story.)
Our deepest condolences, Jack Redway and wife, Sue

This candle will let a little light come back from the bright light you were over the years. You do not know how much someone means until they are no longer with you to brighten your day. You lit up the world by being you. Jane Foss

From 1991-2013 I loved the Twilight league as both a fan and a volunteer employee, working at the tournaments and regular season games. Thanks to Jim Gallagher and Mark and Jane Foss for the chances working with the league. I met three very special people, Mr. Gallagher, MR. Frank McCoy and Gene Johnson. Now, they are all gone, and playing and coaching baseball in another place. Gene was one of a kind, as a manager, One time, he was short of pitching in a game at Mt Nebo and he asked a bunch of guys if they could pitch. Finally, he got to a slight catcher named Cokley Joplin. "Sure, I can pitch" . Gene Grunted, and said . Id like to .......see that. Laughter from all. There were so many times that familiar gruff yell would come from the dugout. THAT WAS NOT A STRIKE. Unforgettable. One more was a game years back against the Newington Capitols. Gene's son Jeff had been ejected and Gene had to go to right field to avoid a forfeit. A Ball was hit to right and Gene Ambled after it and coyly "kicked it" thru a hole in the fence to only make it be a double, instead of a triple or homer. ...The love this man , his sons, and lovely wife Helen showed for the game will never be forgotten by me. I had many moments of joy because of the league and this man and will always Remember him. ..." David (umpire Bindes) that is a Horse.... call...Even David laughed. We all smile and are that much richer to have known this amazing man.

Gene was someone who touched so many people and was so loved and respected by all. He has been the face of The Greater Hartford Twilight League for many years and has touched many young lives. Spring and summer will never be the same without his strong presence and it is inconceiveable that he will not be there in body, but always in spirit. He managed my team for many years and I always felt that all the "boys" were his own family. After games that I missed I could expect a call detailing every play, good or bad that every player made. He never hesitated to explain how awful that error was or how great that hit or play was. I so appreciate his family for "sharing" Gene with us for so many years. Helen was always there for him and the team and you could sense the love that they had. Gene loved baseball, but his family was the most important thing in his life. We will miss him, we loved him and I am sure he will be with us at all games. Jane Foss
