Obituary of Samuel L. Longest

Samuel L. Longest of Granby, CT, formerly of Manchester, CT and N. Ft. Myers, FL, beloved husband of the late Doris B. Longest, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday October 25, 2014. Sam was born Sept. 26, 1929 in Wellington, IL, son of the late Samuel and Hazel (Crawford) Longest. He is survived by his daughter Sharon and son-in-law Paul Hebert of Manchester, son Brian and daughter-in-law Helene (Boucher) Longest of Granby, and his special grandchildren Ashley and Benjamin Longest whom he treasured. He is also survived by his sister Betty Jean Huckelby of Wellington, IL and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his loving wife Doris of 63 years who passed away on August 1, 2014 and his brothers Everett, George, Jerry, Carl, and sister Joyce Huckleby. Sam was Airman First Class of the United States Air Force during the Korean War and was stationed at Narsarssuak Air Base in Greenland before receiving an Honorary Discharge in 1954. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Army Navy Club, and Elks Club. Sam was a crane / heavy equipment operator and member of IUOE 478. He worked in the building of Interstate 384, Millstone Nuclear Power Plant, and City Place in Hartford before retiring in 1991. He also served on the Eighth Utilities District as board member and president in Manchester from 1977 - 1991. Sam loved taking cruises with family and friends and camping in Stafford Springs. He especially loved attending his grandchildren's concerts and events at school. He enjoyed going to lunch at the Granby Senior Center and was an avid fan of the UCONN men's and women's basketball teams. Relatives and friends are welcome to join the family on Tue. 10/28 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at John F. Tierney Funeral Home, 219 West Center St., Manchester. Mass will be celebrated on Wed. 10/29 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Bridget Church, 80 Main St., Manchester. Burial will follow with military honors at East Cemetery, Manchester.
