Obituary of Beryl Schmidt

Beryl L. (Barker) Schmidt died peacefully Saturday (October 4, 2014) morning with family at her side. She was born in Astoria, Queens, NY almost 102 years ago, on October 13, 1912, to Lucy and Robert Barker. Her family moved to Valley Stream, Long Island when Beryl was 13. It was then in 8th grade that she met the love of her life, Norman Schmidt. They were married in 1935 while Beryl was working for the AT&T phone company in NYC. They had one daughter, Pam, and shortly after they moved to West Hempstead. Beryl and Norman were happily married for 55 years. After her husband's passing, Beryl continued living on LI until 2003, when she moved to Manchester, CT to be closer to her daughter, Pam and son-in-law Mike. Beryl was an extraordinary woman. She was kind, gentle, generous and always a "regal lady". Beryl spent years volunteering at the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church thrift shop in Valley Stream, where she was a member since her childhood. She also supported numerous charities. Beryl enjoyed refinishing furniture, sewing, and playing Bridge and Canasta with "the girls". She so enjoyed her 100th and 101st birthday celebrations with her family. At 101 years old she danced to the music of a jukebox with her two great-grandchildren. The last year of her life she lived at the Emeritus Assisted Living Community in South Windsor. Beryl was a popular and much-loved member of the Emeritus family. Beryl was predeceased by her sisters Lucy (Lou) Barker Kappauf and Jane Barker Rathgeber, both of Valley Stream. Beryl is survived by her daughter, Pam (Schmidt) Hiza and her son-in-law, Mike Hiza, her grandchildren Kelly (Hiza) Taeschner and her husband Matt Taeschner of Ashburn, Virginia, Elizabeth (Hiza) Lydecker and her husband Matthew Lydecker of Los Angeles, CA,and two great-grandchildren, Kayla and Ryan Taschner. Beryl was also very close to her niece Beryl (Kappauf) Bauer and her husband Peter Bauer of Valley Stream, NY, her grand-niece Laura (Bauer) Tammaro and husband John, their children William and Katherine of Massapequa Park, NY, and her grand-nephew Pete Bauer and wife Laura, their children Christopher and Matthew of Bellmore, NY. Beryl loved her family dearly and will be missed by everyone who knew and loved her. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to a charity closest to your heart. Beryl would have loved that. There are no calling hours. Beryl will be interned at Greenfield Cemetery on Long Island, NY. The John F. Tierney Funeral Home, Manchester has care of the arrangements.
