Obituary of Arthur Mulligan

Arthur J. Mulligan Jr. of Quonochontaug RI, formerly from East Hartford, beloved husband of the late Cecelia (Murphy) Mulligan died peacefully March 1, 2012. Art, the son of the late Arthur J. and Mae (Clune) Mulligan, was born July 20, 1923. He was raised, worked and lived most of his life in East Hartford before moving to Quonnie in 1999. Art was President of his senior class and graduated from East Hartford High in 1943. He went on to become an esteemed member of the 1950 graduating class of Colgate University. Dad was a World War II veteran, having served in the European Theater. He often shared stories of his last assignment in Paris as an MP patrolling the streets on a Harley Davidson motorcycle. In September 1948, Dad married his high school sweetheart Cecelia Murphy. They shared 45 happy years together, working hard and raising a family. Dad had many careers, including a history teacher in Hamilton NY and owner of Arthur Mulligan Insurance Associates. He was always eager to share his knowledge and expertise from his days in the septic business which lead up to his 25 years of public service as both the Assistant Director and Director of Public Works for the Town of East Hartford. As a golfer, Dad would often reminisce about one of golf's rarest accomplishments, his scoring a hole-in-one in 1973. Dad represented East Hartford as the "1993 Man of the Year" in the St Patrick's Day Parade. He was proud of his granddaughters' scholastic and athletic achievements and enjoyed attending many of their events. His travels included; Broadway plays in NYC, cruising to Bermuda, traveling the countryside of Ireland, wintering in Florida, white water rafting on the Colorado River, Ohio, Alaska and Mexico. But nothing was enjoyed more than sitting on the porch in Quonnie with family and friends sharing the morning catch of clams provided by Dad and his good friend Jimmy Foran. Dad is survived by his loving family, daughter Lori M. Kurlowicz and her husband Ed of Coventry and son Arthur J. Mulligan III, his wife Lizanne "Tiz" and his 2 adoring granddaughters Courtney and Kendall of Southbury. His brother Paul Mulligan and wife Audrey of Fairview Park, Ohio, sister-in-laws Mary M. Bowie of Newington and Helen M. Miggins of Farmington. Dad is survived by his 18 nieces, nephews, their spouses, children as well as friend, Elaine Hannon. Dad also leaves Tommy, his faithful and loyal canine companion for the last 5 ½ years. Dad is predeceased by his nephew Pat Mulligan, sister-in-law Betty Scully and her husband Jack, brother-in-laws Frank Murphy, Tom Bowie, Tom Murphy, and John Miggins, and sister-in-law Kay Glasson. We would like to express special thanks to Tom Bowie Jr. and all the Doctors, Nurses, Nursing Assistants and Sitters of the Frost Floor 1 section of South County Hospital, Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island, and South County VNA services for their kind and compassionate care of our Dad during his illness.
