Obituary of John F. Foley

John Francis Foley, beloved husband of Anne, passed away Thursday, August 21, 2014 in his home after a brief illness. He was born on July 3, 1929 in Keel, Castlemaine, County Kerry, Ireland; the 5th of twelve children of Daniel and Ellen Flynn Foley. After finishing school in Ireland, John immigrated to the US in 1948. Upon arriving in Hartford, John secured employment at Traveler's Insurance Company. He retired from the position of Health Insurance Underwriter in 1990, after 42 years with the company. Also after arriving in Hartford, John became a member of the Irish American Home Society, where he met Anne Clune, from County Clare. John and Anne were married at St. Joseph's Cathedral on September 22, 1956. In 1962, John and Anne moved to Manchester, where they raised their 5 children. In 1986, they purchased a second home on Cape Cod, and they spent many happy times with their children, grandchildren and friends. John was an outstanding Gaelic football player. He enjoyed playing with his brothers throughout the United States and in Ireland, for teams in Hartford and New York, earning many accolades. When his playing days were over, John remained active in the game by coaching, refereeing and supporting his favorite teams. In the 1960's and early 70's, John and his brothers Pat and Darby owned Foley's Restaurant in East Hartford. John was one of the founding members of the Manchester St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee and volunteered for many years with the Manchester Road Race on Thanksgiving. He was a member of the British American Club and the Zipser Club of Manchester. He was a long time member of St. James Church, taking up the collection at the 7:30 Sunday Mass for many years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Maureen Foley-Roy, John and Doreen Foley, Brenda Foley-Lynch and Mike Lynch and Tim Foley, his grandchildren, Kevin and Nancy Knowles, Eileen Roy, Conor Lynch, Molly McCarthy and Kylie Lynch and his great-grandchildren, Aiden and Abigail Knowles, his brothers, Mike and his wife Patti, Tim and his wife Julie, his sisters, Mary Traynor, Bridie Kelliher, and Nell and her husband John Hosey and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his daughter, Sheila Foley, his granddaughter, Caitlin Roy and his siblings, Kitty, Tom, Pat, Darby, Jim and Dan. John's family would like to offer a special thanks to the hospice team at Interim Health Care, especially Elaine, Karen and Kari. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday (August 27th) at 10:00 a.m. at St. James Church 896 Main St. Manchester, followed by burial in East Cemetery, Manchester. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 5:00-8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Caitlin Roy Scholarship Fund c/o Northwest Community Bank, 8 School St. East Granby, CT 06026 or the St. Vincent de Paul Society c/o St. James Church 896 Main St. Manchester, CT 06040.
