Obituary of Albert R. Fournier

Albert Romeo Fournier, 86, beloved husband of the late Lorraine (Sala) Fournier died Friday (July 11, 2014) at his home surrounded by his loving children. Born in Hartford, he was the son of the late Emile and Josephine (Savoie) Fournier and was a proud lifelong resident of the Town of East Hartford. He attended St. Mary’s School and was a graduate of East Hartford High School Class of 1949. He was a three sport athlete where he played football, baseball & basketball and was Captain of the basketball team. He served as a Sergeant in U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. From 1949 through the late 1970’s he owned and operated Fournier Garden Center in East Hartford with his brothers Ernie and Emile Jr. Albert was employed as a firefighter in the East Hartford Fire Department for 36 years and served as its Fire Marshall for the last 8 years. He then continued his service in the Connecticut State Fire Marshall’s office and retired after 8 years of Service. Albert was a communicant of St. Rose Church and St. Isaac Jogues Church and received his 40 year pin in recognition of his annual retreat participation at the Holy Family Passionist Retreat Center in West Hartford. An avid sports enthusiast, he supported UCONN athletics as well as the Boston Red Sox. He loved to play tennis and golf in his retirement, especially with the East Hartford Town Employees Golf league, where he was the 1997 Club Golf Champion and of which he proudly reminded family and friends. Albert also had a great love of genealogy, especially within his own Fournier Family tracing the family heritage back to the 1600’s. A loving and devoted family man, Albert is survived by his children Linda Devlin and her husband Daniel of Manchester, Elaine Twomey and her husband James of North Andover, MA, David Fournier and his wife Anne of South Windsor, and Edward Fournier and his wife Michelle of Hebron; his loving grandchildren Katie Liner and her husband Dave, Ellen Devlin, Michael, Meghan and Stephanie Twomey, Allyson, Brandon and Dylan Fournier, and Benjamin, Rachel and Julia Fournier. His is also survived by his siblings Evelyn, Philisse, Emile Jr., Richard and Lorraine; and numerous nieces and nephews. Sister-in-law, Claire Henson, Brother-in-law Matthew Robinson. Besides his wife, he was predeceased by his siblings, Ulysse, Aldei, Germaine, Gervaise, Conrad, Gertrude, John, G. Ernest and Norman and sister-in-law Jean Robinson. Albert’s family would like to offer a special thank you to his caregiver Lylilya and her husband Roman. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Holy Family Passionist Retreat Center 303 Tunxis Road West Hartford, CT 06107. Funeral service will be held on Monday (July 14th) at 9:15 am from the John F. Tierney Funeral Home 219 West Center St. Manchester with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am at St. Isaac-Jogues Church, 1 Community St. East Hartford, CT followed by burial in St. Mary Cemetery, East Hartford.
