Obituary of Edward F. Fahey

Fahey, Edward Francis, Jr., passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on May 11, 2014, after a hard fought battle with pancreatic cancer. Ed was born in Boston on January 28, 1932 to Edward Francis Fahey and Elena Ianelli Fahey. After graduating from Boston College, Class of 1953, Ed served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Ed and his bride, Rosemary, married in 1956 and settled in Manchester, CT, where they raised their six children. An accountant by trade, Ed spent many years at Pratt & Whitney and retired from I.T.T., making many friends along the way. In recent years Ed volunteered at the Senior Center, provided rides for patients, prepared tax returns for the elderly, and was an active supporter of the Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation, an organization close to his heart. Ed was a talented handyman and always willing to lend a hand. He was a gifted athlete who played and coached hockey and baseball. (In his final days he was able to enjoy watching his Boston Bruins in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.) Ed took pride in his beautiful landscaping and gardening and was known for his amazing apple pies. Among his many endearing qualities, Ed will be remembered for his love of and kindness towards all animals, including many family pets over the years. Admired by all who had the privilege to know him, for his unwavering kindness, integrity, compassion, selflessness, courage, strength and humor, Ed carried great personal faith throughout his life. He was a quiet and gentle soul who made us laugh and brought enduring joy to all of us. Ed was as devoted a husband, father, grandfather and father-in-law as ever there was. He will be missed beyond measure. Left behind to cherish his memory are his wife of 58 years, Rosemary O'Gara Fahey, his adoring children, Karen Fahey of East Hampton, CT, Kenneth Fahey of Land O Lakes, FL, Nancy (David) Gray of Virginia Beach, VA, Susan (Sid) Khanna of Greenwich, CT, Diane (Joe) Schiffhouer of Germantown, TN and Carolyn (Matt) Duffy of Melrose, MA, and his beloved grandchildren, by whom he was adored, Emily Gray, Will and Katie Duffy, Dylan Schiffhouer and Jack and Alex Khanna, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, Ed is predeceased by his sisters, Inez Grueter and Paula Fahey, father-in-law, Francis J. O'Gara, brothers-in-law, Charlie Vey, Leo Grueter, Bill O'Gara, sister-in-law, Sheila O'Gara Rowe, and far too many friends. The family would like to thank Dr. Hazar Dahan, Dr. Daniel Tardif, his special team at DeQuattro Cancer Center and MMH, and the VNA/Hospice of Vernon for their compassionate care. Family and friends may call at The John F. Tierney Funeral Home, 219 West Center St., Manchester, CT, Thursday, May 15th from 9:30-11:00 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:30 a.m. at St. Bartholomew's Church, 45 Ludlow Rd., Manchester, CT.
