Matthew was one of the first kids I played with in the neighborhood as a little girl. He had a stuffed fluffy white dog that he adored and carried - I believe even to kindergarten on the bus with us. With different schools, our paths did not cross much. When I last saw him we were in high school. I teased him about his fluffy stuffed dog - was its name Snowball? I can't recall now. He made me promise not to tell that story to anyone - oops. It seems like yesterday, five years old and a whole life ahead. My heart breaks for you all. Very unfair.

Dear Cavallo Family...I read with great sadness Matthew's obituary in the JI this evening. I remember him so fondly from Brentwood Swim Club teaching him to swim and dive when he was only 4-5 years old. I have a picture of him and I....he is kneeling on the side of the pool getting ready to dive and I am standing in the water encouraging him. I remember the first time he actually did that kneeling dive and how excited everyone was that he finally did it! I think it took several weeks that summer to get him to dive. He was such a young man. Although it has been many years, please know that I wish for all of you peace and that you find healing reading these stories about Matt and sharing your own very beautiful stories with friends and family, especially his 4 little boys. With deep sympathy, Becky Mann McConnell

Dear Maureen and Al, We received the sad news from Mona today and we wept for Matt,Rick and our Peter. The loss of one's child is one of the most devastating and painful parents might endure. Time and family and friends will help you both during this troubled time...try to remember the good times...that wonderful smile and personality that Matt gave to us all. Simply put: he was a great guy. Matt was one of those guys you liked on first meeting him...he was one of our favorites...he is now in a peaceful place surrounded by our departed loved ones having a grand time .... and he is smiling down on both of you today & will smile upon you the rest of your days. May that smile and remembering his happy disposition carry you through this saddest of times..with heavy hearts Claire & I share with you our profound blessings. PS Maureen take it easy and get well soon...have the big guy get you tea anytime you want it. Our love to you and your family, Jim & Claire
