Obituary of Donald J. Sobol

Donald J. Sobol passed away peacefully Wednesday, January 15, 2014. Born in Manchester CT on January 26th, 1950, he grew up in Bolton. He was the first class to graduate from Bolton High School where he designed the Bolton bulldog logo. He also left his mark in town by recently co-designing the war memorial that sits on the town green. While living in Bolton, Don was in Boy Scouts, Troop # 73, and proudly attained the rank of Eagle Scout. Don was also involved with the Civil Air Patrol. Don went on to study Civil Engineering and Fine Arts at the University of Connecticut. Graduation was put on hold, when he changed courses and joined the United States Army Reserves. With his time served he then discharged at the rank of SP 5. Don worked for the Joseph Merritt Company, Hartford, CT for 38 years. Don became well known for his creativity in the graphics design community. Retiring as Vice President, he was one of the company's most respected employees. Don made his home in Willington, CT. for the past 37 years where he enjoyed working on his home restoration and gardening. So many memories and so many friends filled his life while living there. Donald is survived by his wife, Marilyn May Sobol and two step sons; David Ziff of Hartford, Christopher Ziff (and Kimberly) of Burlington. Additionally, Donald enjoyed the antics of 3 step grandchildren: Zach Rudnicki, Emma and Eric Ziff. He is also survived by his Mother, Viola Sobol, of Bolton CT 4 brothers; Anthony Sobol III, Retired Col, (and Margaret) of New Mexico, Paul Sobol, of Hebron CT, Michael Sobol (and Lynn) of Coventry, Gary Sobol (and Jane) of Stafford Springs and Sister Patricia McDermott (and Dermot) of Greenwich. There are numerous nieces and nephews and grandnieces that will miss Uncle Donald and his stories. Don was recently predeceased by his dad, Anthony J. Sobol. The two shall meet and watch over this family from their new home. His love of animals was well known by all and Don requested to have memorial donations made to Our Companions Animal Rescue P.O. Box 956 Manchester, CT 06045, in lieu of flowers. Services for Donald will be held on Tuesday (January 21st) at 11:00 a.m at the John F. Tierney Funeral Home 219 West Center St. Manchester followed by burial with military honors at Bolton Center Cemetery, Hebron Road, Bolton.
