Obituary of Joseph L. Czerwinski

Joseph L. Czerwinski, 92, of Manchester, beloved husband of Irma (Accornero) Czerwinski passed away on Sunday (December 8, 2013), maintaining his spirit and his smile until his death. Born in Rockville, he was the son of the late Ludwig and Sophia (Noga) Czerwinski. In his youth, Joe was a communicant of St. Joseph Church in Rockville, CT. He graduated from St. Joseph School in 1936 and Rockville High School in 1940. He was a member of the Connecticut State Guard in 1940-41 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942-1945. While in the Army he achieved the rank of Technical Sergeant in the Air Force - Army Supply. He served with the 1345th Air Base Squadron in China, Burma and India. Medals that Joe received included: Good Conduct Medal with leaf, American Ribbon, Pacific Ribbon with 2 battle stars, Presidential Unit Citation and the Victory Medal. Following his military tenure, he was employed by Watkins Brothers as their service manager for 38 years. Joe was a member of Manchester's Democratic Town Committee, serving as campaign manager for Ted Cummings. He was a member and past president of the Manchester Jaycees and member and past president of the Civitan Club. He was chairman of the Parking Authority and a past state president of the Laymen's Retreat League. Joe was a communicant of St. Bridget Church, where he was a Eucharistic Minister for eight years and was involved in many other church activities. Joe is survived by his greatest asset, closest advisor and love of his life, his wife Irma. He is also survived by three wonderful children; Joseph Czerwinski, Jr. of Exeter, RI, Gail Sroka and her husband Edwin of Coventry, and John Czerwinski and his wife Diane of Amston; his grandchildren Christopher, Jonathan, Aaron, Joel, Alex and Eric; 5 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his youngest daughter, Lynn Czerwinski. He will never be forgotten by old friends and new, and for the impact he had on their lives. He had a gift in putting people he met at ease and made them feel special. Calling hours will be held at the John F. Tierney Funeral Home, 219 West Center Street, Manchester on Wednesday (December 11th) from 2-3 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Bridget Church 80 Main St. Manchester on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery.
