Obituary of Agnes Romayko

A life filled with compassion, respect for others and dignity ended with the death of Agnes Dziadus Romayko of East Hartford, Connecticut on October 9, 2013. Agnes died peacefully with her devoted family by her side just 4 months short of her 100th birthday. Agnes was born in Manchester, Connecticut on February 9, 1914. Agnes was predeceased by her husband, James J. Romayko, her parents, Pauline Bucior Dziadus and Stanley Dziadus, her sisters, Elizabeth Dziadus, Helen Dziadus Wilkos, and her brother, Edward Dziadus, and son-in-law, James Hodges. Agnes is survived by her daughters, Janit Romayko Hodges, Elisabeth Romayko Robart, son-in-law, Andrew Robart, grandchildren, Sarah Robart Sperry, Alexander and Christopher Robart, and great grandchildren, Mia and Reese Sperry. She was the aunt of Gary Romayko, Paula Dziadus DeBlois, Richard Dziadus, Lauren DeBlois and devoted friend of Dorothy Wojcik Palliardi and Germaine Hodges. Agnes' compassion and respect for others became evident early on in her career at South Manchester High School. She was a member of the Leaders' Club, Vice-President of the Girls' Reserves and a member of the Class of 1931. Agnes then went on to Bay Path Institute, Longmeadow, Massachusetts and completed another degree at Manchester Community College in May of 1983 at the age of 69. Prior to World War II, she was employed by the town of Manchester as a Case Worker in the Department of Social Services and by the American Red Cross during the war. Agnes married James J. Romayko on September 5, 1942 and they began their commitment to each other moving from Connecticut to Rhode Island to California while James was in the US Navy during the war. They then settled in East Hartford, Connecticut raising their two daughters and running a construction and heating business. Agnes' attention to detail and engaging personality grew the business for their future. Agnes' passion for athletic pursuits then emerged mid way through her life. Her Polish heritage and her innate abilities were gifts to Agnes which she realized and cherished. She was the Women's Champion at East Hartford Golf Club in 1980, 81,83, 85, 87 and 89 in the 9 and 18 hole division and a member of the Manchester Country Club and the Connecticut Women's Golf Association, representing Manchester in the Class A tournaments. Her three holes-in-one spoke to her attention to detail, her fine eye for distance and her fair play. Anges simultaneously pursued her passion for swimming having learned her skills at Globe Hollow in Manchester, Connecticut in the 1930s. Her family and cousins were regulars at "The Globe" and she was one of the original "Globe Hollow Girls" along with her sisters. She then swam United States Masters Swimming and was USMS All American in the 200 yd/ meter and 1650/1500 yd/meter freestyle from 1985-2005. Agnes was a Gold Medalist in the Senior Olympics from 1993 to 2007 sharing the podium with many other fine swimmers. She was inducted into the Manchester Sports Hall of Fame in 2008 with her sister, Elizabeth for their devotion to the local sport scene. Agnes was a devoted member of St. James Church, Manchester, having been baptized, confirmed and married there. She was then a member of St. Rose and St. Isaac's communities and a member of their Mothers' and Ladies' Guilds. Her faith was to her God was devout and never faltered. Agnes leaves her special neighbors, the Wednichuk, Wirth and Sawka families and was thankful for the care given to her by Barbara Phillips, M.D. and the staff of the Family Medicine Center. A visitation will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2013 at 9am at the John Tierney Funeral Home, 219 West Center Street, Manchester, Connecticut 06040 followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Rose Church, 33 Church Street, East Hartford, Connecticut at 10:30am. Burial will then follow at the St. James Cemetery, Manchester, Connecticut.
