Obituary of Theodore John Kachnowski

Theodore John Kachnowski, 85, of East Hartford, beloved husband of the late Charlotte Norke passed away Saturday September 21, 2013 at Riverside Health Care Center with his loving daughter Karen by his side. Born May 2, 1928 in New Britain, CT, son of the late Wladyslaw and Albina Kachnowski. Ted attended New Britain High School. After High School he enlisted in the U.S. Army (1946) to serve his country and was honorably discharged as a Corporal of the Military Police as a marksman. While in the Army he played basketball and was captain of the Aberdeen team. After the Army Ted attended Mount St. Mary's College. While in College he was the co-captain of the basketball team, and to this day, still holds some of the school's scoring records. He graduated Class of 1953. Soon after graduating College, Ted met the "Love of his Life" Charlotte and they were married on October 1, 1955. They moved to East Hartford and started a family. Ted played for multiple softball teams throughout his life including the East Hartford Dovelettes and the Reed Construction Team for which he was a member at the time he was inducted into the Softball Hall of Fame in 1985. He worked for Hamilton Standard, Eckart & Finard and finished his working career when he retired from the U.S. Postal Service. Ted was predeceased by his son Steven (2003), grandson Steven "Bubba" (2012), brothers Henry, Victor and Edward. He leaves behind his daughter Karen Kachnowski Nowak and her husband Richard of Manchester, CT, a son Theodore A. Kachnowski of Vermont; grandchildren Richard and Kristine Nowak of Manchester, CT, Clinton Kachnowski and his wife Natalie of Colorado Springs, CO, Michelle Olsen Kachnowski and Jason Kachnowski of Lebanon, CT; and two great-grandsons. He is also survived by a brother Walter Kachnowski and his wife Dorothy of Newington, CT; and many nieces, nephews, and loving relatives. The family would like to extend a big "THANK YOU" to the staff at Riverside Health Care Center in East Hartford for their care, comfort, and compassion given to Ted. This had been his home and extended family for the past nine years. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday (September 25th) at 10 a.m. at the John F. Tierney Funeral Home 219 West Center St. Manchester followed by burial in St. James Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 5-8 pm.
