Obituary of Napoleon Jacques

Napoleon Jacques, 95, of East Hartford passed away on August 8, 2013 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on February 25, 1918, in St. Jacques de Leeds, Quebec, to the late Adelard Jacques and Angelina Turmel Sylvain Jacques. He married Simone Blais in 1941 in Shawinigan and opened his first of several small grocery stores around Montreal. In 1948, he brought his wife and four children to Hartford CT where his brothers helped them get settled. Working as a carpenter he fell from a building and had to spend a couple of years recuperating. When it was time to go back to work, he chose to work as a machinist, first at Cushman Chuck and then at AmCam where he was quickly promoted and worked for 28 years until his retirement in 1980. In 1952, he bought a 3 family house on Babcock Street in Hartford where he raised his family. Around 1973, they moved to West Hartford and then to East Hartford and finally to an in-law apartment attached to his youngest daughter's home. Buying and renovating houses became his second job and he was quite good at it. He used to tell us that even after retiring he did better at real estate than he ever did in the shops and he really seemed to enjoy it. His greatest pleasure in retirement was building furniture for his 7 children, 11 grand children and 10 great grandchildren. All you had to do was get some wood and he'd make whatever you wanted. We kept him pretty busy and he loved making furniture for us. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Simone Blais Jacques and his 7 children and their spouses, Robert and Rosemary Jacques of Tauton, MA, Gerard Jacques and Nancy Fightlin of Newington, CT, Helene and Richard Vaulding of Stafford Springs, CT, Lise and Roger Carter of Bonita Springs, FL, Nelson and Barbara Jacques of Tolland, CT, Carol and Robert Theroux of Pocasset, MA, Dianne and Michael Bernier of East Hartford. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, Helena LeComte, Kevin and Kim Waskiewicz, Mark and Brian Carter, Wendy Pisciotta, Katherine Jacques, Laura Badecker, Amy Aupperlee, Michelle and Joseph Bernier and by 10 great- grandchildren, Keith Ricci, Mark and Kasey Carter, Leo and Max Carter, Elizabeth and Alison Pisciotta, Nathaniel Aupperlee, Abigail and Skylar Bergeron. He was predeceased by his 10 siblings and by his grandson, Ryan Bergeron. A Catholic Mass in celebration of his life will be held on Saturday August 10, 2013 at 11:30 am at Church of the Assumption, 29 South Adams St., Manchester, CT. A viewing will be held prior to the Mass from 9:30 am to 11:00 am at the John F. Tierney Funeral Home, 219 West Center Street, Manchester, CT. A private burial will be held at a later date.
