Obituary of James P. Tierney
James "Jim" P. Tierney, 88, the husband of Jeanette "Jan" Parr Tierney and the late Helen Anderson Tierney, died on Sunday (June 2, 2013) at Salmon Brook Nursing Center in Glastonbury. Born in Manchester in 1925, he was the son of Michael and Mary Connolly Tierney. He lived in Manchester for most of his life prior to moving to East Hartford. In 1985, he retired from the United States Postal Service after 25 years of service. During World War II he proudly served his country in the U.S. Coast Guard aboard the U.S.C. G. Cutter Spencer. He received the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with four battle stars and the Philippine Liberation Medal with two battle stars. He was a former member of St. Bridget Church, Manchester and most recently Our Lady of Peace, East Hartford. He was a member of the Army and Navy Club, the U.S.C.G. Cutter Spencer Association, the Manchester Historical Society and the National Association of Letter Carriers. He was a charter member of the MANPOE Credit Union where he served on the Board of Directors for over twenty years and was the assistant treasurer and president. Besides his wife, he is survived by his son Andrew Tierney, his step children Corrine Mattson and her husband Doug, Sharon O'Connell and her husband Tom and Robert Parr and his wife Lynne, his grandchildren, Matthew and Katelyn, six step-grandchildren and one step great granddaughter. He was also predeceased by his brother Bill Tierney and his sister and brother in law Barbara and Joe Owens. Jim's family would like to offer a special note of gratitude to the staff at Salmon Brook Nursing Center for the compassionate care they provided. Family and friends may call to the John F. Tierney Funeral Home, 219 West Center St. Manchester, on Tuesday (June 4) from 5-8. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10:30 at Our Lady of Peace Church, May Rd. East Hartford, followed by burial with full military honors at Woodlawn Cemetery, Suffield. Family and friends are asked to meet directly at church on Wednesday morning.
