Obituary of Charles R. Pillard

Charles Robert "Bud" Pillard of Tolland departed this earth on Friday, April 12, 2013. He was predeceased by his cherished wife of 55 years Rose Marie (Buck) Pillard. He was born in Manchester, Connecticut on July 5, 1929, a son to the late Charles Louis and Violette Paula (Peltier) Pillard. He is survived by his seven children, Linda Esber and her husband, Jon, of Sarasota, Florida, Debbie Kim Ferguson and her partner George Lopiano, of Manchester, Connecticut, Tami Pugrab and her husband, Larry, of Ellington, Connecticut, William Charles Pillard, and his wife, Sandy, of Tolland, Connecticut, Robert Shaw Pillard of Manchester, Connecticut, Loreen Downham, and her husband, Dennis, of Manchester, Connecticut, and Ann Toper, and her husband, Gary, of West Hartford, Connecticut. He also leaves behind his nineteen beloved grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Charles is also survived by his four sisters, Lorraine Demko, and her husband Dr. Richard Demko, Jacqueline DeGroff and her husband Harold, Doreen Lawrence, and her husband, Robert, Dyann Venezia, and her husband, Fred, and a brother, Michael Terry Pillard. He was predeceased by his brother Richard Pillard, His sister Barbara Banavige and her husband, Bernie. Charles served his country proudly for twenty-four years In the United States Coast Guard, United States Navy, and Retired as Sergeant First Class in the Connecticut Army National Guard in 1971. He was in service during both WWII and the Korean War. He Served in the USA, Philippines, South Pacific, Okinawa, Iwo Jima, France, Italy, and Spain. He received many awards which included; WWII Victory Medal, National Defense Medal, Two Army achievement Medals, the Army Accommodation Medal, and was very proud at his retirement to receive the Connecticut Medal of Merit. Charles will be remembered as a dedicated husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, and great grandfather who was very proud of his family. He enjoyed fishing, UConn basketball, traveling, and times spent with his great grandchildren. He will be truly missed by all who knew him. His funeral will be held on Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at 10am at St Bernard's Church, 25 St. Bernard Terrace, Rockville. Burial will follow with full military honors in East Cemetery, Manchester. Family and friends may call at the John F. Tierney Funeral Home 219 West Center Street Manchester on Monday, April 15, 2013 from 4-8 pm.
