Obituary of Judith A. Lanning

 

Judith Anne Lanning (O’Brien), aged 85, previously of Manchester, CT, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on December 9, 2023, surrounded by her loving family at her home in South Windsor. Born on October 18, 1938, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Judy was the cherished daughter of James O’Brien and Julia (Doyle) and the youngest of eight children.

A dedicated student, Judy attended Most Blessed Sacrament School and West Catholic High School for Girls. Her passion for education led her to Trinity College in Washington, D.C., where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education, followed by a Master’s degree from Fordham University.

Judy's illustrious teaching career spanned several states, including positions in elementary schools across Georgia, Maryland, Staten Island, Queens, New York, and Connecticut. Her commitment to faith and education shone brightly in her role as Religious Education Director in various parishes in Queens. There, she developed impactful programs for various sacraments and served as Director of Religious Education. Judy concluded her distinguished career as a Religious Education teacher at East Catholic High School, followed by 20 years as a beloved Third Grade teacher at Buckley Elementary School.Her love for children was evident in her dedication to providing meaningful education. Judy forged lasting relationships with her colleagues, impacting many lives through her teaching and guidance.

Judy's memory is lovingly cherished by her devoted husband, Gerard Lanning; her daughter, Anne Marie (Andre) Reggio of Glastonbury and her adored grandchildren, Liam and Hannah, who were the lights of her life as well as many nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her siblings, Sr. Rita Patricia, SND, John O’Brien, Donald O’Brien, Joan O’Brien, Geraldine Dunn and Vincent O’Brien.  She is survived by her brother Rev. James O’Brien, SJ.

Her legacy as an educator and a compassionate, kind-hearted individual will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. Judy’s life was a testament to the power of education and the enduring bonds of family. She will be deeply missed but forever remembered as a guiding light in the lives of many.  Judy requested individuals to perform acts of kindness for special needs members in the community.

Relatives and friends are invited to a celebration of Christian Faith and Hope at St. Patrick-St. Anthony, 285 Church Street, Hartford, CT 06103 at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 14th, burial in Holy Cross Cemetery will immediately follow. Calling hours will be held at the John F. Tierney Funeral Home, 219 W.
