Obituary of George Joseph Roy
George J. Roy, 98, of Manchester CT, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 9, 2023, with his daughters nearby. George was born on October 6, 1924, in New London, CT, the son of the late Pierre and Alice (Turnbull) Roy.
George served in the army during World War II and continued in the army reserves. He received his Bachelor degree in business from Bryant College and was an accountant by profession in a number of firms. He spent much of his career as the Chief Financial Officer at Manchester Memorial Hospital. He was very active on several boards of directors, as well as contributing in various capacities at St. James and St. Bartholomew Catholic Churches.
George is survived by his daughters, Christine Suurtamm and Sr. M. Clare Roy; his grandchildren, Liisa Suurtamm and her husband, Jason; Karen Suurtamm and her husband, Gordie; and his great-grandchildren, Sophia, Frankie, and Eddie. George was predeceased by his loving wife, Lottie, in 2009, as well as his two sisters, Marion and Anna.
Relatives and friends are invited to the John F. Tierney Funeral Home, 219 West Center St. in Manchester for a visitation on Friday, September 15 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday, September 16 at 10:30 am at St. Bartholomew Church, 45 Ludlow Rd. in Manchester (please meet directly at church), and the burial will take place immediately following at St. James Cemetery.
George’s family would like to offer a note of thanks to all who showed special care to George, particularly in his final years. This would include the Shady Glen waitresses, the Priority Care aides, and the caring staff at the Residence at South Windsor Farms.
