Obituary of Virgil L. Griffin

Virgil L. Griffin, 85, of South Windsor, passed away at his home on Friday, August 11, 2023. Son of the late Walter and Marie (Jones) Griffin, Virgil was born on June 28, 1938, in Dixie, GA. 

Virgil graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in 1957 where he was a track and football star. He moved from Schenectady to Connecticut in his early 20’s and landed a job at Pratt and Whitney Aircraft until an injury ended his career. He and his wife went on to own and operate a successful daycare that ran for 17+ years, Griffin’s Daycare, which was home away from home for many children. They truly loved caring for and nurturing children.

Virgil had many passions, bowling being his favorite. Virgil bowled almost every day for over 45 years. He was a member of the TNBA. Virgil played 5 perfect 300 games, 2 being sanctioned. Virgil enjoyed coaching other players, and he was also a skilled pool player. He was challenged in many pool tournaments at his local senior center. A perfect day for Virgil was a family cookout with him at the spades table saying, “who’s next?!” He loved his family dearly and was known to be one of the best grandfathers you could ask for.

Virgil is survived by his children, Regina Walker and her husband Marcus, Cheryl Griffin and her partner Kevin, Virgil Griffin Jr. and his wife Monique, and Reggie Griffin and his wife Amy; his grandchildren, Kiele, Israel, Courtney, Genae, Dakari, Joscelyn, Jacquelyn, Jarred, Javon, Donald, Nina and Reece; his 6 great-grandchildren; and many loved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Besides his loving wife of 55 years Gwendolyn (Hallums) Griffin, whom predeceased him in 2018, Virgil was predeceased by his parents and his siblings. 

John F. Tierney Funeral Home has care of the arrangements. Relatives and friends are invited to a memorial service at Philips Metropolitan Church, 2500 Main St. in Hartford on Friday, August 18, 2023.
