Obituary of Ellen Greany

Ellen A. (O’Hare) Greany, 96, of West Hartford, CT, passed away peacefully on August 6, 2023 after a long and fulfilling life. Ellen was the daughter of Bernard V. and Nellie (Murphy) O'Hare and was born in Shenandoah, PA on October 13, 1926. She graduated Magna Cum Laude and Valedictorian of her class from East Stroudsburg State Teachers College with a Bachelor’s degree in Education. She was also in the 1947-48 publication of "Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges". Ellen was married to John R. Greany on June 30, 1951 and raised seven beautiful children together until his death on December 19, 1979. Ellen was a dedicated 6th grade teacher early in her marriage until her first child, Jay, was born in 1953. She loved being a mother and dedicated her entire life to the raising of her children. Ellen's deep connection to her faith and innate philanthropic heart drew her to a life of charitable involvement with her local food pantry, where she served as an active member. She loved to travel in the States as well as Europe and filled her home with beauty and mementos of her many trips. She was extremely creative, loved playing the piano and had a great eye for art. She was also a gifted seamstress and knitter. Ellen is survived by 6 children, Jay B. (Merry) Greany, Kate (Charles) Schwer, Mary E. (Paul) Suter, Mark (Christine) Greany, Ann (James) Savage, Jon (Molly) Greany, 17 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren, as well as many nieces & nephews. Ellen is preceded in death by her husband, John R. Greany, daughter, Beth Greany, grandson Bernard W. Greany, brothers Bernard & Arthur O'Hare, and sisters Mary O'Hare, Catharine McDonald, and Ann Coghlan. There will be a celebration of life and burial of her ashes in Rye, NY at her family’s discretion.
