Obituary of Benjamin Hallums

Benjamin Franklin Hallums was born March 6, 1938, in Easley, South Carolina to the union of the late Frank Hallums and Magdalene Williams Hallums. He was the fifth of eight children. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Elford, Furman, Joseph and Bill Hallums, one sister Gwendolyn Griffin and a son Steven Hallums.

Benjamin graduated from Clearview High school. He completed his undergraduate studies at Johnson C. Smith College and furthered his education with a Master’s Degree from the University of Hartford. He was employed at Quinnipiac College as a counselor for over 30 years. He was also an instructor of black history studies and spearheaded the Black Student Union as well as the gospel choir at Quinnipiac. Benjamin was also a member of the United States Army.

Daddy, Dad, Papi, Papa, Uncle Benji, Benji and Benjamin was a young spirit with much wisdom. He was a compassionate listener and eager to share his knowledge and experience. He encouraged the younger generation to pursue their dreams and strive to do their best. He loved his family and friends and was supportive and proud of their accomplishments. He was a huge fan of most sports, especially tennis and he watched as often as possible. Also, a news buff, he watched MSNBC daily. Another passion was listening, playing and singing gospel music.

Left to cherish his loving memory is daughter Jacqueline Hallums, son Bernard Hallums, daughter Maisha Hallums, sisters Frances (Earle) Beamon, and Ruth Tutt, former wife and friend Phyllis Hallums, grandchildren Kamaria, Kaiya, Kelshaun, and Kalaya, sister-in-law Elizabeth Hallums, brother-in law Virgil Griffin, nephew Raymond Moore, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.
