First, my deepest condolences to Mr. Moriarty's family, friends, and all who were near and dear to him! Mr. Moriarty was my 9th grade history teacher at Illing in 1982/1983. My parents divorced heading into 7th grade and I was really lost for a few years and looking back, I'm so grateful for the many awesome teachers and coaches that influenced me from grades 7-12. Mr. Kelly, Mr. Russo, Mr. Suitor, Mr./Coach Pearson, Mr./Coach McCarthy, and of course Mr. Moriarty. Even at that young age I just remember thinking how different this man was and wondering why I was so drawn to this seemingly authoritarian figure in my life. What made him so great was yes, he was an amazing history teacher...well-prepared, passionate, thorough, incredible lesson plans, genuinely cared about his students, and he inspired you to learn but more importantly, he used his station in this life to teach and prepare his students to be high character, upstanding, disciplined, good, and accountable adults.
There is one story I want to share that not many people know but maybe he told Mrs. Moriarty about it, which would be pretty cool! I started playing golf around 15 or 16 and got one of those Junior Memberships at Manchester Country Club. I noticed that Mr. Moriarty was there quite a bit during the summer and one day, I can't remember if we got paired together or if he asked me to play with him (I believe he asked me) but we ended up playing together. I was pretty bad having just started playing but he was incredibly patient but also a very focused and determined golfer. In a single round of golf, I learned so much more about the incredibly intense but kind person he genuinely was. The intense part is I remember him missing a short putt and his face turned bright red, steam literally coming out of his ears, and I honestly thought his head was going to pop off and I believe he dropped down and did 20 push ups after putting out to punish himself. But then on the 5th hole, the short par 3 with the elevated tee, I hit this awful squib shot that hit the bottom of the hill rolled up the hill to the green, onto the green, and rolled in for my first and only hole in one in my life. Mr. Moriarty erupted in joy, was hooting and hollering, picked me up and spun me around and couldn't have been more excited and happy for me. I used to wonder if the man we saw in class was just this persona he created to get the most he could out of his students but that day showed me he was that man every day and we all benefitted from who he was and how he lived his life.
Rest in peace Mr. Moriarty, you were one of those one in a million people that some of us are lucky enough to cross paths with and I hope your heaven is filled with the best 36 holes and greens you've ever seen!
Thank you for who you were and all you did for so many!!!

Mr. Moriarty was my 9th grade history teacher in 1981-82 and continues to impact my life. I became a history teacher in great part because of him, even knowing I could never live up to his oratorical presence or skills.
From "Mort" I learned that your appearance mattered and that you were accountable to others. I can still see him stalking the classroom on quiz or test day to see who had dressed up. If you forgot, and risked getting a harder test for the class (which I'm not sure really was harder, although that wasn't the point) you felt like you let your class down.
What I could try and emulate from Mr Moriarty was how much he cared. I broke my leg in the second to last game of football season, meaning I would miss most of basketball season. It must have been obvious how crazy I was going, so one day he stopped me as class was ending and told me the following: "Tomorrow, after school, you are coming with me. Bring gym clothes." The next day and several days after, he took me to his health club and had me work out with him. He told me not to rush back from the broken leg and explained how I could make it worse if I did. For a 14 year old being raised by a single mom, it was an example of masculine leadership and love that impacts me to this day.
Rest in Peace Mr. Moriarty. You are not only not forgotten, you are REMEMBERED with love.

I am posting this on behalf of Steven St. Thomas, with his permission.
My history teacher was God. He said so. He told us this.
He was one of the best teachers, and people I ever met. Mr. Moriarty.
It was not his disciplinarian, regimental, somewhat fearsome side that commanded respect from his students. No one dare back talk Mr. Moriarty.
It was that you didn't want to disappoint him. That's what got the respect from his students. Because he was a nice man. And a good heart. Yes he would slam something down really hard if you weren't paying attention. But you never sat there saying F U Moriarty and your class. You sat there saying "you're right. I should have been paying attention."
Absolutely adored Mr. Moriarty.
Steven St. Thomas

I had the privilege of playing basketball for Coach Moriarty and he has been a major influence in my life as a teacher, athlete and a coach! I loved his crazy antics and his ability to motivate people! Thank you Coach for influencing so many students and players over the years.

Mister Moriarty was my history teacher in ninth grade at Illing in 1964, Illing's ninth grade then being housed at Manchester High. I loved his class and always enjoyed HIM. He was really into his subject and I suppose it helped that I was into it too, since he made history even more interesting for me. He was lively and had a great sense of humor. I so regret that after all this time I never told him how much I enjoyed his class. All I can do now is try to thank him through his family. I too will always remember him fondly.

My condolences to the family. I had both Mr. Moriarty and Mrs. Mort (class of 88). He made history so interesting. Once he was talking about an ancient ruler who named all of his children after him. (I can't remember who!) We all laughed and make comments about his ego and the absurdity of it. And then he told us he named his son James and his daughter Jamie...

Mr Moriarty was my favorite teacher in junior high. He made his lessons alive and exciting and I’m interested in history because of his influence. I was one of those students who dressed up on test day. He taught about civility and order in his classroom . My sincere condolences on your family’s loss.

To his family, I am very sorry for your loss. I was one of his many students at Illing in the 70’s. He was a great teacher and made you want to learn and excel. I wore skirts on quiz day; and to this day I still have odd dates and names filling my memory space (732; Martin Luther). He was my favorite teacher. He also had a saying before all quizzes, and I may not have it correct, but “piece of cake; can of corn”.
