Obituary of Florence M. Gregory

Florence (Mizak) Gregory “Flo”, 87, of Manchester, beloved wife and mother, passed away on May 21, 2023, at the VITAS Inpatient Hospice Unit in Waterbury in the presence of her family.

Florence was born in the Flanders section of East Lyme on January 15, 1936, daughter of the late Thomas and Agnes (Havrilla) Mizak. She graduated from Manchester High School in 1954 and continued on a year at Hilliard College until leaving to begin work as an executive secretary at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft.

Florence was married to the late James P. Gregory Jr. on May 25, 1963. They were married for 58 years until James’ passing in 2021. She lived in Manchester most of her life.

Florence left Pratt & Whitney to raise her children. She volunteered frequently at Saint James School. When her children were older, Flo began to work again at Westown Pharmacy as a pharmacist’s assistant, then worked as a receptionist in the Savings Bank of Manchester’s Loan Department.

Both Florence and James enjoyed volunteering at Saint James Parish, vacationing in Cape Cod, and taking bus trips to various tourist attractions. Florence loved cooking for her family, embroidery, knitting, gardening, and birdwatching. In her later years, she enjoyed watching UConn Girls basketball and Boston Red Sox baseball games.

Florence is survived by her two sons, the Rev. James T. Gregory of Woodbury, Thomas Gregory of Vernon, her daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Michael Martin with whom she lived, and two granddaughters, Sara and Shelby Gregory of Manchester.

Family and friends may call from 5 to 7 pm. Thursday, May 25, 2023, at the John F. Tierney Funeral Home, 219 W. Center St., Manchester. Funeral service will be held from the John F. Tierney Funeral Home at 10:00 am on Friday, May 26th with a Mass of Christian burial at Saint James Church, 896 Main St., Manchester, Saint Teresa of Calcutta Parish at 11:00 a.m. Burial to follow at Saint James Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to Saint Teresa of Calcutta Parish, Manchester.
