Obituary of Robert K. Merrill

After a 99-year journey, Robert “Bob” Merrill - devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to all who knew him- entered into eternal and well-deserved rest, reuniting with his beloved wife, Dorothy, on Thursday, March 16, 2023.
Born in Hartford to Harris and Mary Merrill, he attended Hartford High School before entering the Army in 1943.  Bob participated in six major battles during World War II throughout Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace and Central Europe. While in Belgium, he went into a minefield to pull a wounded buddy out and take him to the hospital. On November 12, 2019, he was appointed to the grade of Knight in the Order of the Legion of Honor by the Consul General of France. They awarded him his medal for the Legion of Honor in a ceremony in New York.
After his time in the service he came home to marry his sweetheart, Dorothy. They were married for 73 years. During this time, he worked for Pratt & Whitney in security until he retired. Longtime residents of East Hartford before moving to South Windsor, Bob was an active member of St. Christopher Parish and a member of the men’s club. He was also a member of the VFW and the American Legion.
Bob was preceded in death by his wife. He is survived by his 3 children, Patricia and Michael Fasciglione of East Hartford, Sandra Wieleba of Wethersfield and Robert and Lisa Merrill of Coventry. Also, his grandchildren Heather and Kristen Fasciglione, James and Jackie Wieleba, and great grandson Robert Wieleba, as well as grand-dog, Keebler.
Bob had many friends among the staff and residents of Brookdale South Windsor. Heartfelt thank you to Lisa, Jennifer, Juliette, Carmen, Patty, Billy and so many more. Also thank you to his caregivers Dee, Maureen and Joanita from Happy Home Care for taking such good care of him.
