Obituary of Jo-Ann McTighe

Jo-Ann Barbara McTighe, 79, passed away peacefully in her home on Wednesday, November 30th, secure in the company of her beloved children and devoted husband, Jack McTighe, and still basking in the warmth of a Thanksgiving weekend spent surrounded by more than two dozen children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and in-laws who will survive her.

Born in Brooklyn, NY in December of 1942, Jo-Ann met the love of her life while they were both in high school. With Jack by her side, she spent the next sixty-five years building a family that spanned four generations and touched countless others by modeling unconditional love for one another, and for everyone who was fortunate enough to encounter her.

A devout Catholic and active member of the St. Teresa of Calcutta community, Jo-Ann also wouldn’t hesitate to state her opposition to any position that conflicted with her values of love, compassion, and empathy for all. She passed those values onto her six children, eight grandchildren, and her great-granddaughter, as well as more than 100 other children she helped bring up through the daycare service she and Jack ran out of their home for more than 30 years, often offering free or discounted rates to neighbors and friends who couldn’t afford childcare.

Although her passing came two days prior to her 80th birthday, the wealth of family and friends she accumulated over the years bear witness to a long, fulfilling, and well-lived life.

Visitation will be held between 3-6 pm this Sunday, December 4th, at the John F. Tierney Funeral Home at 219 W. Center Street in Manchester. A funeral mass will take place at 11:00 am on Monday, December 5th, at St. Bridget Church, located at 80 Main Street in Manchester, followed immediately by a burial service at East Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Masonic Charity Foundation of Connecticut, the philanthropic affiliate of Masonicare Hospice.
