Renee was and will be one of the greatest teachers I have ever known. She has touched so many “children” in such a special way, especially mine! And she was a friend that shared and helped so much. I cannot express all that she was and will be, but the world is a much better place because of Renee. I am so sorry for your loss, but my memories fill my heart with warmth and even a grateful smile, because she was a part of my family’s life.

My very sincere condolences to your family. I was in her second grade class in 1987 when I was new to the school, and she was one of my all-time favorite teachers. I will never forget how warm, caring, and funny she was, and how she made me feel welcome and comfortable. Most of all, I remember her reading aloud; she inspired my own lifelong love of literature (and I'm certain that of countless others!) with her spirited rendition of all kinds of fun books. Thank you, Mrs. Hartzog. Your enthusiasm and kindness meant the world to me.

Harry and I had the pleasure of meeting Renee when we first moved on Ferguson in 2013. She was walking Buddy and we were walking Callas. One conversation complimenting each other's dog led to many years of friendship with her and Richard. Both Renee and I being former teachers had many walks and shared stories of students that an impact on us and those we hoped we had made an impact. We will miss her constant smile. Warmest condolences and continued friendship to Richard and Buddy.
Fondly, Bill, Harry, and Callas

Words can hardly express my heartfelt condolences on the passing of a really special lady. I always sensed an extraordinary kinship with Smith (as I called her) and I'm sure others had a similar attachment to her. Everybody at Bolton Center School loved her: Administrators, parents, her colleagues, and most of all her students. She had a way of making people feel comfortable and safe around her. She had that big personality, the kind that people just liked to be around. Generosity was perhaps Renee's most abundant trait. She gave everything of herself but most of all she gave her time and love. She will be missed. She is missed. We'll never know another one like her. She may be gone in body but she will live on forever in our hearts, minds, and thoughts. Goodbye, friend.

Hi Mr. I:
Thank you so much for your touching tribute and for attending my mother's celebration of life. I'm very sorry that I kept getting pulled in a million directions and didn't get a chance to talk to you. I was thrilled to see you and so many of my mother's former colleagues (and my favorite teachers) in attendance. It was a very special day that we will cherish forever.
I hope you're doing well,
Matt Hartzog
