Julia Britnell

Obituary of Julia Britnell

Julia Anne Hamilton Marshall Britnell, 89, of Manchester, died Friday February 5, 2021 at Manchester Manor.  Born in Rawalpindi, India, she was the daughter of the late British Lt. Col. Harold and Rita Marshall. After World War II ended, the family moved back to their native England where she lived until marrying Walter Britnell in 1956 and moving to Toronto, Cincinnati, and eventually Manchester, CT in 1960, where she lived the rest of her life. She had a lifelong love of tennis and met many friends through playing and working at the Manchester Racquet Club. Her favorite aspect of the job was running the men’s ladder which she did until retiring in 2002. She was a fan of the UConn Women Huskies, traveling with friends to see the Final Four on multiple occasions. Her family will remember her as fun loving and generous, such as the Christmas shopping trips with her grandchildren to the mall. She was also not afraid to laugh at herself and loved to tell stories of her time living in India. Julia is survived by her sons William Britnell and his wife Faith of Manchester, and Alex Britnell and his wife Stacy of West Hartford; her grandchildren Sarah Fairbanks and her husband Patrick, Jennifer Britnell, Collin Britnell, Chad Britnell and Cameron Britnell; and her great-granddaughter Annabelle Fairbanks.  She was predeceased by her sisters Sally Marshall and Marjorie Gale. Her family would like to say a special thank you to her friend Linda Tyler for being so generous with her time, especially over the last few years when mom’s health was in decline.  Due to the circumstances of the pandemic, funeral service will be private and at the convenience of the family.  Memorial contributions can be made to Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The John F. Tierney Funeral Home, Manchester has care of the arrangements.  For online condolences please visit www.tierneyfuneralhome.com
