Obituary of Richard F. Hagearty

Richard F. Hagearty, 82 of Manchester passed away Thursday (Dec. 17, 2020) at Manchester Memorial Hospital. Richard was born in New Haven, CT, the son of the late Francis and Helen (Kelley) Hagearty. He graduated from East Hartford High School, attended St. Michael’s College and served in the U.S. Army. Richard began his long career in real estate as a land surveyor, title examiner and then appraiser for the State of Connecticut before entering the banking industry with Society for Savings and then Connecticut Bank & Trust as both an appraiser and commercial lender. He left banking in 1984 to form Charter Valuation Services, Inc., later renamed R.F. Hagearty & Associates, Inc., where he continued as a trusted appraiser and counselor to his many clients right up through his death. He was a proud member of the American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers and the Appraisal Institute earning the R.M. and then SRA designations and being active for many years on various chapter, regional and national committees. He was also an active member of the Home Builders Association of Connecticut for many years and had many treasured friends and colleagues among the appraisers and home builders. In addition, Richard was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and provided volunteer service to the Town of Manchester Housing Authority.

Dick met his wife Karolyn at the St. Patrick’s Day parade in New York City and on April 18th 2014 celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Karolyn passed in June of 2014. Dick is survived by his children and their spouses Sean T. Hagearty and Beth of Hebron, Maura Overland and Christian of Fitchburg, WI and Erin Jensen and Christopher of Waltham, MA; his grandchildren Elizabeth Karolyn, Emma Catherine and Katherine Rose Hagearty; William Jacob, Alice Rose and Eavan C. Burke Overland and Chloe Diane, Eli Rowland and Jane Eva Jensen; and several nieces and nephews. With his wife Karolyn, Dick was devoted to his children and his grandchildren, both a constant presence at their many activities over the years. Along with both parents and his wife he was predeceased by two siblings Francis Hagearty and Helene Lesieur.

Relative and friends are invited on Thursday May 20th for visitation from 4-7pm at the John F. Tierney Funeral Home, 219 W. Center St., Manchester. Mr. Hagearty’s Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday May 21st at 11am in St. James Church, 896 Main St., followed by burial in St. James Cemetery, Manchester.
