Obituary of Ernest J. Irwin

Ernest J Irwin, age 92, husband of Mildred A. (Doering) Irwin passed away on Tuesday August 23, 2005 at Crestfield HCC. He was born in Manchester, Connecticut, the son of the late Frank and Leticia Irwin. He leaves two sons, Ernest J. of Flushing, MI, his wife Barbara, Gary C. of Manchester and his wife Lorraine, two sisters, Beatrice of Sun City Center, Florida and her husband Kenneth, Dorothy of Manchester, three nieces, two nephews, ten grandchildren, and twenty great-grandchildren. He was extremely active with the Boy Scouts for more than thirty seven years, serving as Scoutmaster, Cubmaster, summer camp organizer and leader, and member of the troop committee. He also served as an organizer and steward for the AFSCME Union, and as President of the Manchester Town Employees Union. His passions included stamp collecting and gardening. Following retirement he continued with his community service doing volunteer work at the Manchester Senior Citizen Center and at area nursing and retirement homes. He traveled extensively with his wife throughout the United States, Mexico, and the Caribbean area and loved to tell stories about his experiences and travels. He also became an avid supporter and follower of UCONN Basketball. He leaves behind a legacy of teaching his sons the meaning of love, compassion, service, and respect for all people. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Visitation will be at the John F. Tierney Funeral Home 219 West Center St. Manchester on Wednesday from 6 to 8 pm. Funeral service will be conducted from the Tierney funeral home at 9:15 am with a service at 10 am on Thursday August 25, 2005 followed by a graveside service at East Cemetery, Manchester. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor�s choice.
