I’m so sorry to hear about the passing of John Roberts. John and I work for about 10 years on gas turbine engine problems. I was at UTRC and John was at Pratt and Whitney. John contacted with me to help him solve some of the ice and water ingestion issues. We cam up with many novel ways of measuring the ice and water breakup as it enters the engine fan and compressor. Together we then wrote a comprehensive report that allowed Pratt & Whitney to model ice and rain ingestion to avoid and predict some of their engine tests. John was always personable, helpful, funny and very creative in solving these complex problems. I am sorry we never talked about our Princeton experiences. What we do not know about people until we read their obituaries. Our condolences go out to John’s wife and family.

John was a special person who influenced many with his technical knowledge and wisdom and his gentle manner. I worked with him on a NATO panel developing guidelines to help the engineering community with environmental issues. He was astute and so giving to me as a younger engineer. I do recall the meeting in Turkey where his suitcase got lost and everyday after the meeting he went to the airport to meet his bag which was supposed to arrive (and never did). He then returned to buy a new shirt. Each day at the meeting with most others in suits he worked professionally and humbly in his wild coloured and flowery or plaid shirt. He is missed but his kindness and enthusiasm live on in many many people around the world- at least in Canada.

My heart breaks on the loss of this wonderful person. I am from Corry, PA and John's brother, Jim a classmate, so knew them both during our high school days. Over the years Jim has kept me posted on the travelling adventures of John and Jim on the road...one of those visiting me in DC. One dinner was not enough to enjoy the company of this fine man. I am not surprised to learn of all his concern and love for others and their return in kind. Time will help ease the pain of his passing and comfort will come in sharing the memories. My sincere condolences and heartfelt sympathy to all.

I first met John Roberts in Toulouse, France, in September 1997. I was attending my first meeting of a technical committee that was chaired by John. It was immediately clear that here was someone of great character, knowledge and humour; someone to be admired. At the end of the meeting my wife and I had dinner with John and Betsy in a pavement café in the main square in Toulouse – I recall it vividly – and we all became firm friends.
Some years later, when my career was taking one of life’s “off ramps”, John went to a lot of trouble to obtain an interview for me to work with him at Pratt and Whitney. Circumstances were such that this initiative did not come to fruition, which is a pity. I never forgot his generosity.
He chaired that technical committee for many years and more recently I was honoured to be made chair myself for a few years. I and all the members of that group appreciate just how much energy John put into it. All of our recent work even now, long after his retirement, is in some way a tribute to his dedication, knowledge and leadership.
My wife and I had been planning to visit New England this coming Fall and one of our aims was to visit John and Betsy again. Sadly we can no longer do this and regret very much that we will no longer be able share time with this outstanding man.
Our thoughts are with all his family now but especially with Betsy, to whom we send our love and most profound condolences.

To Betsy, Jim and the rest of the Robert's family, I would like to express my deepest sympathy in the loss of John. He looked so much like my grandmother, Olive Crum, who was his aunt. He also possessed her lovely disposition and demeanor. He will truly be missed by all who knew him. My heart breaks for your family.
With Love and Sympathy,
Joanne Crum Reilly

John was a loving Father-in-law to me. He was so proud of all of his children and grandchildren, and enjoyed those opportunities when we could all get together. Special memories include John and Betsy's anniversary celebration in CT, and the many family trips to Cape Cod, Charleston, and California. Of special significance, is the road trip that he took with son, John and Grandson, Parker from GA to NASA in California this past summer. We miss him dearly and look forward to a time when we can celebrate John's life, well lived.
