Richard Sklenar

Obituary of Richard M. Sklenar

Richard M. Sklenar, 75, of East Hartford, the life partner of Charlotte Sklenar passed away Saturday, December 28, 2019 at Manchester Memorial Hospital after a hard fought battle with cancer. Born in Connellsville, PA, he was the son of the late Melvin A. and Anna (Malomko) Sklenar. He was proud of his Pennsylvanian roots and his Hungarian and Slovakian heritage. He fondly recalled his aunts and uncles being an integral part of his upbringing. With two full scholarship options, he chose to attend Pennsylvania State University where he met the love of his life, Charlotte. While there he studied Aeronautical Engineering and was also part of the ROTC. As a US Army veteran, he served in Korea. Upon return from the military, he was quickly hired by Pratt & Whitney Aircraft where he provided over 20 years of service as an Aeronautical Engineer. His career in Engineering served him and his family well as he worked hard to support a growing family of seven children. Engineering also afforded him the opportunity to travel to China for business purposes and share his experiences upon return. He thoroughly enjoyed reading and learning. His mind was like an encyclopedia, as he would often share the knowledge he learned without hesitation. From a young age throughout adulthood, he understood the value of the library, frequenting it on at least a weekly basis. He enjoyed listening to the oldies and would sing along in his deep tenor, gazing at Charlotte as he reminisced of younger and carefree days. Additionally, he was an avid Pittsburgh sports fan, especially his beloved Pittsburg Steelers and was a fan of Penn State Football. He is survived by his seven children and thirteen grandchildren, Daughter Lisa St. Pierre, her husband John and granddaughter Celine; Son, Rick Sklenar, his wife Stacey and grandchildren, Joseph, Sean and Anna; Son, Charlton Sklenar, his wife Loretta and his grandchildren, Dylan and Caylan; Son, Randy Sklenar, his wife Catherine and grandchildren, Brandon, Alexander and Isabella; Son Matthew Sklenar; Son Teddy Sklenar and his grandchildren, Payton and Paxton; Daughter Lily Holcomb and her husband Roy and his grandchildren, Tyler and Sadie. Richard and his physical presence will be sorely missed within the family home, although we all find comfort in knowing he is now pain free and at peace. Funeral service will be held on Friday, January 3rd at 11:00 a.m. at the John F. Tierney Funeral Home 219 West Center St. Manchester followed by burial with military honors at Silver Lane Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 9:00-11:00 a.m. For online condolences please visit www.tierneyfuneralhome.com
