Obituary of Howard E. Lappen

Howard E. Lappen, 90, of South Windsor, formally of Bolton, and beloved husband of Jeanne (Fitzgerald) Lappen, died peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, October 18, 2018. He was born on June 18, 1928 in Jamaica, NY, son of the late Howard and Estelle Lappen and then moved to Manchester, CT. He was a graduate of MCC with a degree in Criminology. He served in the United States Marine Corps during WWII and was an Investigator for the Soldier, Sailor and Marine Fund for twenty years before retiring. Howard was a huge supporter of St. Jude Children’s Hospital, actually meeting the late Danny Thomas’ family at the unveiling of Mr. Thomas’ statue in Memphis, Tennessee in 2011. Howard was married to the love of his life, Jeanne Fitzgerald for 66 years.

Besides his wife Jeanne, Howard leaves his three children, Sharon Lappen of Andover, Scott (Lynne) Lappen of Tolland and Janice Mawson of Amston, his brother Jack (Barbara) Lappen of Manchester, his sister Barbara Jean (Robert) Johnson of St. Petersburg, FL, his five grandchildren: Matthew (Lauren) Lappen of Tolland, Shaun (Christie) Lappen of Coventry, Justin (Danielle) Lappen of Ashbury, NJ, Jessica Mawson of Plainville and Michael Mawson of Amston, brother-in-law Robert Fitzgerald of Manchester, sister-in law, Rita Lappen of FL, and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his brother Richard Lappen of FL, his brothers-in-law John, Joseph, Edward, Raymond, and Richard Fitzgerald, and his son-in-law Thomas Mawson of Amston. 

Family and friends may gather for a wake on Monday October 22nd from 4-7 PM at the John F. Tierney Funeral Home, 219 West Center Street Manchester, CT. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 AM Tuesday October 23rd at St. James Church, 896 Main Street Manchester, CT. Those wishing to make a memorial donation may make one to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or the donor’s choice.
