Obituary of Alice M. McCooe

Alice Mary McCooe, 93, died on October 15, 2018. Her beloved husband of 70 years, Charles W. McCooe, passed away in May 2018. Alice leaves her daughters, Carol McNamara and her husband Paul, Mary DelTatto and her husband Charles and her son, Daniel McCooe and his wife Susan.

Alice was the proud Nana of eight grandchildren, Michael McNamara, Kathleen McGuire, KeriAnne Hoffman, Patrick McCooe, Ellen McCooe, John DelTatto, David DelTatto and Cara Crochier. Alice was blessed with five great grandchildren, Holly, Chloe and Nolan McNamara, Timothy McGuire, and Charlotte McCooe. 

Alice leaves her sisters Leona Clough, Doris Young and Theresa O’Connell. Her sisters, Winifred Otonosky, Wanda Nicklaus and Viola Humphrey, predeceased her.

Alice spent her early years on the family farm on Lehman Hill in Colonie, New York with her father, John J. Humphrey and mother, Lena A. Humphrey and her six sisters. Alice loved to tell stories about her rooster Scrappy, her pet piglet Friday and the horse that lived in a shed nearby and licked his owner’s dinner plate clean every night. She attended Maywood Elementary and Roseville High School in Colonie. Alice moved to Manchester, Connecticut after her marriage to Charlie in May 1947. She worked at the Southern New England Telephone Company and later at AT&T in Hartford.  Alice retired in May 1987.

Alice was an avid and meticulous gardener; her roses were lovely and weeds were not allowed in her domain.  Alice was known for the many beautiful quilts she sewed by hand and gave to family and friends. She created quilts for her grandchildren, each with a special theme.

Alice’s family wishes to thank the staff, especially the caring nurses and aides at Brookdale Senior Living of South Windsor and the staff of Masonicare Hospice for their kindness to Alice and their support of her family.

Alice’s family will gather on Monday, October 22, 2018 at 8:30 AM at the John F. Tierney Funeral Home, 219 West Center Street Manchester.  Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM at St. James Church, 896 Main Street, Manchester. Burial will follow at St. James Cemetery, Manchester.
