Obituary of Frederick Hemsley Levis Smith

Frederick Hemsley Levis Smith, 64, of Canton, CT, passed away at home in the presence of his loved ones on October 13, 2018. Fred battled Crohn’s disease for over 25 years, and most recently was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Fred was known for his tenacious spirit - an endearing quality that was well-known to all who loved him. He was born on March 24, 1955 in Philadelphia, PA to the late Geoffrey Story Smith Jr. and Louise Butterworth Smith. Throughout his youth, Fred’s family moved often and he ultimately chose central Connecticut to be his home in 1987. Shortly afterwards, he started his own company, First Service Petroleum, which he owned and operated for nearly two decades. Fred’s proudest accomplishment was his three daughters, and four grandchildren. He loved to spend his time with family and friends while honoring family history and traditions and creating new traditions with his grandchildren. Fred had an insatiable love for music, Philadelphia sports teams, and his time spent at Saint Paul’s School. He spent many hours cultivating his plants and garden – inviting goldfinches and other birds to visit. His photo collection was forever growing, representing family and friends across generations.

Fred leaves behind his daughter Alexa Biron and son-in-law Jeremy Biron, his daughter Hannah Smith, and his daughter Frances Hayes and son-in-law Nathan Dooley-Hayes; his four grandchildren, Ruger Zinn, Clare and Reed Biron and Hemsley Hayes; his siblings, Kathy Steege, Timothy Smith and Louise Chase. He is predeceased by his parents and his brother Geoffrey Story Smith III. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation.

The Funeral service and burial will be held on Monday, October 22, 2018 at 10:00am at Old St Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 59 Tariffville Road, Bloomfield, CT 06022. The John F.
